Are You Eligible?
Eligibility requirements for an American Assistance phone and Lifeline service often vary slightly from state to state, but you probably qualify for a phone from the company if you participate in any of the following government aid programs:
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps or SNAP)
- Medicaid
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8)
- Veterans Pension and Survivor's Benefit.
- Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance (BIA)
- Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (Tribal TANF)
- Tribal Head Start (only those households meeting its income qualifying standard)
- Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
Qualifying for the ACP discounts is even easier. The programs participation with which you can qualify are almost identical, but the income eligibility is much more lenient. You can qualify as long as you make less than 200% of the Federal poverty guideline numbers.

I’m researching Lifeline cell phone programs for my disabled niece and find your site very helpful. But I am needing to know how up to date the info is here? I noticed most of the links and info don’t mention any date of the articles or the ones that do are from 5-7 years ago (this is May of 2023). The Lifeline programs seem to change dramatically over the years. Is there a way to know how current various links and info is? Thank you for what you do.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Most articles and product-specific pages were updated at the beginning of 2023, but older “news” articles do not get updated.

Henry says
This provider charges a monthly fee of $14.95 if you are not a California resident for 500 voice minutes and 4.5 GB data. So unless you are a California resident, you will have to pay for service just like the non-Lifeline provider programs.
Lee Cox Fort Wayne says
I am not sure if they charge $15. I have seen that on an ad also but I believe they do not charge that now. So if you are saying this did you actually have them charge you for this and was it within the past year? I’m not being rude by asking I’m trying to be detailed because if they are not charging then people need to know that this is another option. I believe they give 500 minutes with unlimited texting and 4.5 GB of data. I’m not sure though. And for the affordable connectivity program they give a 8-in tablet which has okay specs fairly decent ones probably the sixth best tablet available in Indiana.
Foxx Development T8 tablet. 2 GB of RAM 32 GB of RAM with Windows 10 or Android 10 rather or Android 11. It was made last year. The company has a very good looking 10.4 inch tablet on their page Fox development company that is the manufacturer. And I’m hoping they’re selling that for $150 or less.

Otto says
While I’m at it, though, I’m on my second Maze Speed from them ($35 after I badly cracked the screen), and they’re not exactly something that I can recommend. The batteries can’t take many charge cycles, and worse, the phones shut off randomly, with being put in pockets representing a particular problem. Five reboots a day is par for the course.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Sounds incredible frustrating.
Otto says
One thing to note about American Assistance’s top-up plans is they don’t roll over. I once gave them $29 for extra voice, and it went bye-bye two days later.
Be nice to their lone customer service fellow, though; he tries. I’m still planning on changing providers once I can make a call again, though.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Most service providers say their roll over plans are good for 30 days. I guess it could interpreted as “30 days after your enrollment date” but that would piss us off, too.
Otto says
They got a chargeback.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Don’t know what that means, Otto.

Terracom Wireless uses AT&t for their data for the tablets that they provide for the Emergency brought man benefit program. They’re not currently offering these tablets but they are supposed to again soon for the ACP program. But I believe terracom uses T-Mobile like several other lifeline providers for their phones.
I don’t know why but I believe I may have read somewhere that Cintex or Newphone Wireless may not use T-Mobile for their data on their phones.

American Assistance Never Again! FREE GOVERNMENT PHONES NEVER AGAIN!. My phone arrived with a scratched and scuffed screen. The battery is practically unchargable it is so used up..Then, this android will not give me access to make any calls because the phone is so defective. I cannot even get emergency.. The email they sent me from a compliance operator said to call for repair issues. I can’t call because I don’t have another phone near me. The program only allows you to have one phone..This is a replacement phone I paid $30.00 for,, not free. The free one they sent broke after a short time…They have the worst phones. You do not know what kind of used phone you are getting from this free program, but it will be always be a damned android.. So, I am still stranded without phone service until I see someone walking around here in the woods. Folks, if you live alone, do not use this company.. American Assistance will not let you use any other phones except their own, because, I already asked. Plus, I also know if I do ever get a chance to call them, I will speak to one of their foreign customer service reps, who cannot even speak English half-assed right. If I had health issues, or if I am in an emergency situation, I will not be able to call emergency from this defective android phone they sent me, In conclusion, if you live alone, do not use this free government cell-phone service or life line or,you will be left stranded. They do not let you have a back-up phone for emergencies if you live all alone.. Better to get a regular landline phone installed and pay for it yourself, and buy your own cell phone you want too.. Always have two phones, if you live all alone because,a phone is your lifeline. This free government program, will not let you have another phone, and may give you a bad used phone, and bad customer service,

Waiting on a replacement phone to come in the mail for a week without phone service.since I am not allowed to have another phone, I cannot call my doctor. American Assistance sucks.
Glenn says
Now waiting 10 days for a replacement phone I paid $30.00 for from American Assistance to arrive in the mail.I would like to know how long other people here have waited for their replacement phones to arrive in the mail..
Free Government Cell Phones says
Most companies say it will take two weeks. However, many of our readers say it has taken three or four weeks or even longer. You might want to check your service provider’s website to see if it offers a “Check Your Status” function. Or even try calling customer service just to check.
Glenn says
What? 3 0r 4 weeks or longer? For a replacement to arrive? What the actual f+kkk???? No, American Assistance does not have a link where I can check my status.
felicia nelson says
If I have a extra phone that is still in the box can I use that phone and sign up for the service ?
Free Government Cell Phones says
Maybe, maybe not. Not all phones are compatible with all cell networks, Felicia. So you need to check with your service provider (or, if you are not yet enrolled, with your potential service provider) to see if the specific make and model of cell phone is compatible with its network. If not, check out other service providers in your state until you find one with which you can use that cell phone. Here’s where you can find all the service providers in your state:

I Hope To Get A Cell Phone With A Large Enough Screen, And I Am Talking About A Samsung Galaxy 5″ Or 6″ Screen Because I Have Trouble Telling What Is On The Screen.
Free Government Cell Phones says
You may get lucky and get that sort of phone, Diana, but please be aware that the phones are handed out at random. It’s as if the service providers have big buckets of phones of all masks and models, and as if the customer service agents reach in and grab one without looking. The customer before you may get one make and model, you may get a completely different make and model, and the customer after you may get a third make and model. Unfortunately, that’s just the way it works.
Diana Lynn Kelly says

My brother recently received his phone, and he has not been able to get service with it. He has placed several calls to this company and not one of the representatives have been able to help. He will have service for 5 minutes after hanging up and then it goes back to no service, no network provider. When he calls and request’s to speak to a supervisor he is denied. He is in need of a phone due to his health issues, as he is pending a disability insurance decision and financially unable to get one on his own.l am his sister and can be reached at 702-801-****. sha says
what is the process of porting a numbner
Free Government Cell Phones says
It’s pretty darn simple, Sha. When you speak to your new service provider, you just have to tell them “I want to port over my current phone number.” If we were you, we’d say it at the beginning of the call, several times during the call, and confirm that it is being ported over at the end of the call.
sha says
does anyone know if im able to port my number from another gov’t free phone company (safelink) into american assistance wireless? and also what towers do they use
Free Government Cell Phones says
Yes, you can always port your number over. It should be as simple as telling the customer service agent that “I want to port over my current phone number to my new phone.” But we advise you to say it repeatedly during the conversation and confirm that it has been done at the end of the conversation.
Sigrun Maldonado says
I had a pretty horrible experience with your customer service people and need to file a complaint. I will also no longer be your customer. My husband has had a free phone through you (American Assistance) since about June of last year and everything fine with that except about 3-4 weeks ago his phone stopped working. I called for him soon after to let you know that his phone wasn’t working. The person I talked with wanted me to trouble shoot it anyway (remove battery, put back in and charge for several hours) and then call again. Of course we had been charging it for many hours before that, but anyway did what she wanted us to do. It did not work, the phone was still dead and so I called the next day and spoke with another agent. He had me pay $10 and some for a replacement phone (for shipping/and or taxes) and which I did. Both times, the agents were quite rude and raised their voices on me (unnecessarily). The first one rudely said that “I need to plug in the phone” as if I’m a complete idiot. Both had me go through some kind of automated reactivation system, where I had to answer several questions (date of birth, last 4 digit social, etc. etc. etc.). In both cases they accused me of lying about my husbands birthday and said I had given them a wrong birthday and were ready to instantly dismiss him from the program. I told them I would be happy to send them his drivers license. The first agent I spoke to said she’d found his license and that I was correct and they had it wrong in the system, she however never apologized for yelling at me at accusing me for lying. The same thing happened the second time around. I had to go through the automated reactivation system, the man accused me of lying and then never apologized for being wrong. Anyway my husband received the phone within the time frame given, called the next business day to activate it and it worked great for one day. The next day he tried to use it, a pop-up would appear saying the there was no sim-card detected. Some years back I had gotten a new phone with a bad sim-card and thinking that was it made another phone call that I kind of dreaded but still was not expecting the horrible experience that followed. I called and somehow the phone call was disconnected while giving identity verification. I called again and this all went well to begin with (during verification). Then I explained to the agent that my husband had just received the phone, it had been activated the day before, and now was not working. At first, and again this agent as well raised his voice (unnecessarily) and said that we had not turned in documentations and that you had repeatedly asked for those. I was going to tell him that for some reason we had never received those notifications, that I was happy to submit those and had been expecting to do so when I called originally to report the phone not working (and in both of the earlier phone calls neither one of the agents mentioned anything about documents needing to be submitted). But just as I began to explain this, the agent suddenly cut me off now yelling at me and said that he could see that we had another Lifeline provider and that’s why you had closed our phone and I don’t remember all the insults he spewed out. I had to yell back to get through and said we didn’t have any other provider but to know avail he just got more defensive, yelling even louder and accused my husband for having gone behind my back and applied for another phone. He repeatedly accused my husband of misconduct and even said couple of times that I “needed to have a serious discussion with him.” I have to admit, knowing my husband, that this almost made me laugh if I had not been so distraught by his extremely rude accusations and also thinking to myself that someone might have possibly stolen our identity to get a free phone and frequently trying to get through to him. My husband easily dreads any kind of applications or anything where he has to give up information on phone numbers etc. At last, I finally got him to give me the phone number for the Lifeline program and which I called. At this point I was very shaken after this insulting and mean experience. Thankfully the lady I spoke with from the LIfeline program was very nice. She did tell me that some documents were due, but that we did not have any other phone provider. She was very apologetic and said many times she didn’t understand why the phone company’s reps had to be this rude. She said I could try to call you back and have this corrected and submit the documents or wait until March 19th to apply through another phone provider. We chose the second one. Don’t need this experience again and rather have no phone for the 3-4 plus we need to wait. So this is my complaint. You may want to forward this to your supervisor/manager and suggest a much better customer service training to your employees. Yes we are poor at this moment, but we still have the power to spread out the word. No human being or any beings deserves to be treated this way.
Free Government Cell Phones says
You are 100% correct that no one deserves to be treated this way, Sigrun. But PLEASE understand that “we” are not your service provider and “we” are not responsible for the way you’ve been treated. Donna M. says
I received my American Assistance cell phone in the beginning of May. It was pretty awful (I’m 70), hard to use, no instruction, then tried to use it once and a got message I really can’t remember, that I didn’t understand or know how to correct. I just never used it again, after 30 days of no use your account is supposed to close…
I just got got an AA agent, then asked for supervisor. I’m locked into my Lifeline AA account for a year even tho the account is closed. (I said I didn’t sign a contract, “well, it’s the Government” Wrong.)
So no gov phone for me till June .18. I did ask if they would still be getting tax dollars if account was closed, she said no.
Free Government Cell Phones says
It sounds as if everything they told you was correct, Donna. Did you have internet as part of your plan? If so, that will explain the one year time limit. If you did not have internet as part of your plan, you should be eligible to enroll with a different company 60 days after your account was cancelled.
Donna M. says
No, I didn’t have internet as part of my ‘plan’, and I wasn’t asked by American Assistance at the time (I would have said no).
I was lucky to be able speak to a supervisor, who was understanding and professional. But she didn’t ask about internet as part of my ‘plan’ either, so didn’t explain the 60 day option if I didn’t have internet, she had my account in front of her.
What’s going on American Assistance?
Free Government Cell Phones says
Your guess is as good as ours. But you should call back again with the following article in front of you so you can quote the USAC:
https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/faq/how-do-i-switch-lifeline-providers
One year if your plan has internet, 60 days if it doesn’t.
Please let us know what happens, Donna.
Donna M. says
Hi Folks,
I called American Assistance again yesterday to explain I never signed a 1 year contract. After not being able to find my account with my name and address I was transferred higher up, he couldn’t find it either and asked for B-day and last four, then found it. There was fine print about a 365 days.
I had printed the two sided application form and faxed it in ( I don’t have copy or original). I got the phone with wallet size instruction and info cards and NO RECEIPT, so no account number, no record of transaction, no new number (I had to call tech support to get it).
I explained again I couldn’t use their phone/service and wasn’t fully informed and signed no contract. I said I’d file a grievance and he said it’s all legal (I’m sure it is) This is how American Assistance operates, they are bottom feeders of LifeLine private contractors.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Let’s not be too hasty condemning American Assistance. The situation you described (at least the part about the “small print” and 365 day contract) are standard operating procedure in the Lifeline industry. They are merely following the rules of the program as outlined by the Federal Communications Commission and the USAC.
Donna M. says
I’m not complaining about American Assistance following the guidelines but about their using ‘small print’.
I went to download a hard copy of the application form (I originally used) to see exactly what I missed. Where the fine print was, where a choice was indicated to include internet. The site still says you can download hardcopy , only you can’t. So I can’t even see the form I filled out anymore.
Like a shell game, now you see it now you don’t. Also as I said June 12:
“I was lucky to be able speak to a supervisor, who was understanding and professional. But she didn’t ask about internet as part of my ‘plan’ either, so didn’t explain the 60 day option if I didn’t have internet, she had my account in front of her.”
Their are many private contractors out there these days who just ‘take the money and run.’
Thank you for your patience and your help for me and others. You are very good and professional.

Our old friend, Google Translate tell us that Maritza wants to know how to cancel her service. Maritza will need to use Google Translate to turn our English response into Spanish.
The easiest way is to contact your service provider’s customer service team. You can do that by calling 6-1-1 on your free government cell phone. You can also turn your phone off and not use it for 30 days. That should result in automatic termination of your account. The third way, if you are near your annual recertification date, is to simply not recertify. That should also result in the automatic termination of your account.

LaJuan A Wilson says
I tried applying for a free phone for one of your representatives on the street and they said i have a phone in which i don’t have or any memory of applying before, can i get some help to solve the matter so i can receive my free phone
Free Government Cell Phones says
There are a couple issues here, LaJuan.
First, we recommend NOT enrolling at street tents and booths. There have simply been too many cases of fraud and abuse resulting from this kind of enrollment.
Second, if you’ve never had a free government cell phone, but the records show that you have, it’s either an error or fraud. Here’s what we mean: Even if you had been enrolled at one time, but have forgotten about it, your account should have been cancelled after you neither sent nor received any calls or texts for 60 days. If that’s the case, you should no longer show up as enrolled and should be eligible to receive a new cell phone from any of the service providers in your state. If you have truly never been enrolled but the national Lifeline data base says you are enrolled, it may be that someone has fraudulently enrolled in your name. You should immediately report the fraud in order to clear your name and make yourself eligible for an account. Here’s an article that tells you how to report that fraud:
https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/faq/report-lifeline-assistance-fraud-abuse-waste
Good luck. Please keep us informed on your progress. Your story could be very interesting to many of our readers.

Mahendra Satyadev. says
My Senior citizen phone No. 1-331-245-****. I opted for smart phone and paid extra $ 31.00
To my surprise within 2 months battery of the phone found faulty. It exhaust within 2/3 hrs , after charging 100%.
So it is to be connected with charger for 24/7. Which is useless .
When I complained , customer care of American Assistance told that the warranty of the phone is only for 30 days.
There was nothing in writing about warranty or othe terms and conditions provided by the company.
It is totally unethical to have warranty only for 30 days for cell phones.
Have company has approved their terms and conditions including warranty period , through proper authority ? ( of Federal gov. , through which this program is supported)
Moreover the design of both ordinary and smart phone are not at all suitable for Seniors.
1 It numbers and letters are very small , even young person also find difficult to read or operate it. 2 The screen and text letters are also very small .
Is the design is approved by government?
Current models and design of all providers for seniors phone is totally unsuitable , and it should be designed looking to Seniors physical capacity . Otherwise it is shere waste of gov. Money.
My phone must be replaced , or the cost should be refunded.
And if it is not done, then please cancel my account.
Shall take matter with appropriate authorities.
And necessary actions regarding my findings withe respect to design of the phone , may taken.
Free Government Cell Phones says
You asked a lot of good questions, Mahendra, so we’ll try to cover them all. First, we do not know what “senior citizen” phone you are referring to. The only senior program we are familiar with is a pilot program and not available nationwide yet.
Each company gets to set its own rules and if a company only guarantees its phones for 30 days it is free to do so. We’d say that’s a great way to lose customers (you are a perfect example), but that is, unfortunately, the way it is.
Each company is free to distribute whatever kind of phones (smart or otherwise) that they choose. The government does not mandate which phones must be handed out as part of the free government cell hone program.
We agree that it is borderline criminal for a company to sell you an “upgraded” phone and then give you only a 30-day warranty that’s buried somewhere in very small print. We agree that your money should be refunded or you should get an adequate phone.
As you can probably tell from this response, we cannot cancel your account because we are not American Assistance. We are an independent website that is not affiliated with any of the Lifeline Assistance companies. So your justifiable complaints left as comments here on this site will not reach your service provider.
Here’s our advice:
1. Call your service provider’s customer service team and ask to speak to a supervisor. Tell that person your story and ask for a replacement smartphone. If they will not comply, tell them that you are going to make complaints to the Federal Communications Commission and your state public utility commission. Here’s an article that tells you how to make that complaint. Make sure you read it so you know what you’re talking about when you speak to the customer service supervisor:
https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/faq/file-lifeline-service-complaint
2. If you don’t get satisfaction from your service provider, switch providers. You have multiple choices in most states. Here’s where you can find a list of service providers in your state:
https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/states
And here’s where you can find out how to switch service providers:
https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/faq/how-do-i-switch-lifeline-providers

I understand that you are not cell company, but for better general policy , quality supply and services to the seniors and proper application and use of Federal program and money, you can take all the matter with appropriate authority against the service providers.
Not for my individual problem, but for all senior citizen facing quality and service problem from all service providers under Fedaral scheme.

I honestly believe some of them are just older people who’s mental prowess isn’t what it used to be, but the rest of them are clearly just people who choose not to read. There was two people somewhere on here who had the audacity to tell Free Government Cell Phones that they were official Lifeline reps and that they were scamming people and trying to shame them. It was a horror show. One of the biggest things that irritates me is when people act like their false assumptions or opinions are facts.

FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net says
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Yes, you are correct, it seems Nevada is not one of the states they serve even though their website shows on their map that they do. In fact, they have conflicting information for several states on various pages. We are going to change our page to only list the states for which they have a selection available.
