Just two days ago we published, ReachOut Wireless to Enter 8 More States and the District of Columbia, which showed more competition in the free government cell phone market coming to a handful of states. We write today of more good news for these very same states — second-tier players Terracom Wireless and Tag Mobile are also petitioning the FCC to allow them to offer free Lifeline cell phone service in the states.
These markets, that could very well see up to three more providers in the coming months, are Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
The FCC documents show the following Public Notices of intent.
Terracom Wireless’ Public Notice (had link, now broken) relevant paragraph:
TerraCom seeks designation as an eligible telecommunications carrier for the limited purpose of offering Lifeline and Link-Up services to end-user customers in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
Tag Mobile’s relevant paragraph:
TAG seeks designation as an eligible telecommunications carrier for the limited purpose of offering Lifeline and Link-Up services to end-user customers in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and the District of
Columbia.
The big boys, Tracfone’s Safelink Wireless and Sprint/Nextel Virgin Wireless’ Assurance Wireless are already in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. But New York and North Carolina competition will be welcome, indeed, as they only have one vendor, Assurance Wireless.
More competition means better phones and plans for the financially disadvantaged. And hopefully better customer service.

There’s no way for us to know what happened because we are not your service provider, Jeniffer. Have you called your service provider’s customer service team to ask for help? If not, that should be your next move.

Looking for a phone for my 95 year old mother who currently resides in an assistant living facility. She only needs unlimited minutes to call family members daily. It can be a landline phone or a cell phone that is easy to see and navigate. She recently received funds through a Medicaid assistance program offered by NC.
