Executives at other California Lifeline Assistance companies must be stocking up on ulcer remedies right now, because Assurance Wireless just introduced the best plan in the free government cell phone business. The company’s new California customers will now get free unlimited talk, free unlimited texting, and of course, a free cell phone.
This is a huge leap forward in the free government cell phone business and allows Assurance to leapfrog past its California competitors. Four companies currently compete in the California Lifeline market — Assurance Wireless, Budget Mobile, ReachOut Wireless and Telscape. Assurance’s revolutionary FREEdom Plan offers low-income Californians far more than any of the other companies’ plans.
Specifically, Budget’s best California plan offers 1000 free minutes and unlimited texts. And Telscape’s California plan includes 1000 free minutes and 200 free texts. And ReachOut’s California plan offers 250 monthly minutes for $2.50 (not exactly the textbook definition of a “free government cell phone”.
Assurance’s new California FREEdom Plan replaces the prior plan that offered Lifeline customers 250 free voice minutes and 250 free text messages per month.
What happens to Californians who are signed up for that “old” plan? They’ll be migrated to the new California FREEdom Plan. Unless they choose to stick with their existing plan (and we can’t figure out a logical reason to do that), they’ll automatically begin receiving the unlimited voice minutes and unlimited texts every month.
This is sure to come in handy for millions of struggling Californians. Nearly 1.5 million Californians currently find themselves unemployed and nearly 30% live in poverty. Those unlimited minutes will undoubtedly help them contact potential employers and land jobs that will elevate them off the poverty rolls, help them arrange for better family housing, make it easier to stay in touch with family and friends, and simplify conversations with medical professionals.
Californians can consider themselves lucky, and not just because of the sunny weather. Assurance does business in 40 states plus the District of Columbia and although the company is also enhancing its offers in all those markets, none of the other plans are as generous as the California FREEdom Plan. Assurance customers in other states will also get unlimited texts, but they’ll continue to get just 250 free voice minutes every month instead of the unlimited minutes Californians will now begin receiving.
This isn’t the industry’s first unlimited talk and text plan. Others are offered by a few small companies in a few small states (Oklahoma and Alaska), but Assurance is the first major Lifeline company to make the unlimited talk and text offer. We give them a lot of credit for doing it in a big way by offering it in the state with the most people living below the poverty level.
Of course, nothing changes about how you qualify for a free cell phone, free unlimited minutes and free unlimited texts: Californians may qualify for Assurance Wireless if they already participate in at least one public assistance programs, such as Medicaid, Medi-Cal or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). You can also qualify if your household income is at or below 135% of federal poverty guidelines.
Let us summarize this as clearly as we can:
If you live in California and if you qualify for the Lifeline Assistance program, you MUST check out Assurance Wireless’ FREEdom Plan. It’s the best free government cell phone program in the country.

And outbound call is simply a call she dials on her phone. This is opposed to an inbound call, which is one she receives.

My neighbor lady is 88 years old. She has a very small income from Social Security. She is really having a tough time paying just her usual bills such as rent and utilities, She does get some food from the local food bank. I told her about the Lifeline free phone. She was excited to hear about that because her phone bill is a landline phone and her bill is about $30 a month. Can you tell me how I can help her apply for the free phone and service ? Thank you. already have an assurance phone. about four weeks ago the state decided I was not eligible because I used a post office address for service since I am homeless. they turned my phone off permanently . in order to sign up with assurance I have to start over and get a new phone. when they turned it off the phone becomes unusable.i have been waiting for weeks for a new application after numerous call to assurance.
john says
applied for lifeline phone on 12th of February 2014. finally received phone in September and got disconnected on October 17th. they said the state did not approve my phone application so they turned off my phone. when I called assurance they said I had to start over and reapply for another phone. I did and still have not received an application or a new phone .this lifeline program sucks and everyone you speak to online is not English, you cannot understand what they are saying and they do not understand you. they obviously think that waiting eight months for a cell phone is not long.. bullshit. this is the worst program run by the dumbest people on earth or any planet.
Larissa says
I signed up got my phone a week later and the phone works great

Well, I hope the phones given by Assurance Wireless in CA are of better quality and actually able to make calls that go through and stay connected.
I tried Assurance Wireless not once, not twice, but three times. Each and every time they provided a crappy “toy” phone that I could not use in my home because there were no “bars”. Since I’m disabled and homebound, that was a deal breaker for me.
Plus, on the rare occasion that a call actually did go through, it was so warbled with so much static that I couldn’t hear the other person and they couldn’t hear me. No worry, though – the call usually dropped within one minute.
Here’s the kicker. Each time I complained about the phone, Assurance Wireless sent a new one, with a self-addressed envelope in which to return the phone. Each and every time, they “lost” the phone – or at least, claimed they never got it – and cut off my service. Then they wanted me to pay $19.99 to replace the phone – a phone that could be purchased on Amazon.com for less than $5 because they’re so cheap.
I finally switched to Safelink. The phone is of much better quality, and I can actually make and receive calls from within my home, with little to no warbling and static, and the calls don’t drop. Granted, Safelink doesn’t have a website to manage one’s account, like Ass Wireless, and they eat up more minutes (a 46 sec call will cost 2 minutes, for example) but I will still take them over Ass Wireless.
It’s no wonder Assurance Wireless has to resort to this gimmick of unlimited calls/texts! How else could they get anyone to stay with them, once they found out they couldn’t actually USE their “service”! Plus, their customer service people are in the Philippines and they are some of the rudest, most arrogant people! They aren’t well-trained and don’t give a rat’s ass, either.
Good luck, CA!

i have had assurance since April is my service now unlimited?
FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net says
Good question. Here is the answer right from Safelink’s website:
How do I switch to the California FREEdom Plan with Unlimited FREE voice minutes and Unlimited FREE texts if I have another Assurance Wireless plan?
If you have already been approved by the California LifeLine Administrator to receive LifeLine benefits and are currently enrolled as an Assurance Wireless customer, you will be automatically switched to the California FREEdom Plan unless you elect to remain on your existing plan. You will receive a text message letting you know that you will be switched.
