What happens when I cancel my LifeLine service?

< Back to all FAQ's

updated 2/1/23

What happens when you get a job or move out of public housing or become ineligible for a free government cell phone for one reason or another?

At that point, you should contact your service provider and ask them to cancel your account. Then you have a couple decisions to make: Some service providers offer paid plans. You can choose to continue with the same service provider under one of those paid plans, or you can switch to a paid plan with a different service provider. Why would you want to switch? Lots of reasons. Better service, better coverage, better prices, etc.

If you don’t contact your service provider to cancel your account, it will be automatically cancelled by the service provider after it has been inactive for thirty days or on the anniversary of your Lifeline start date when you do not recertify that you are eligible.

Details vary, but you can learn more by contacting one of the outstanding free government cell phone providers.

I canceled assurance because they never sent the replacement phone I paid for. Then applied with Qlink. They sent me a Sims card. No phone. Now they say I can’t apply for another

You need to specify which program you’re applying for — free government cell phone or SIM card. The good news is that any Lifeline customer can switch service providers at any time. So you can move to a different company again to solve your problem. Here’s an article that tells you how to make the switch from one provider to another:

You are able to purchase your own phone and use it. However, without knowing any of the specifics of your case, we suspect that the problem is that the phone you purchased is not compatible with the Assurance national network.

That being said, we are not Assurance so we cannot cancel your account. You need to contact that company’s customer service team.

Dont feel bad. I only applied to see if I was eligible. They never sent an notification, then a phone shows up and I’m enrolled and have an account that I cant access at all to cancel it and they have lied in circles about the PIN to access the account that first they pretended they sent, then they gave me a number to get it, that number told me there was a system error and they keep telling me to call that number of Facebook, through bot replies with different names signed at the bottom but same messages. They are obviously a scam company and I’m in the process of going through the FCC to try and get removed, because I cant go with a different one as long as I’m trapped by this company

I spent a lot of my Saturday, May 28, 2022 and again Sunday, May 29, 2022 on the phone with different customer service representatives each having different answers for my issue. I had a Wi-Fi internet service and my services including my smart tv were working fine when I found out I didn’t qualify for Lifeline anymore due to it had been transfered to Assurance Wireless & was assured by Assurance I did not need a WiFi internet service. An agent on Saturday finally got my tv & internet to work after more than an hour trouble shooting. Come Sunday my tv & phone did not have internet service & got several excuses as to why it wasn’t working and broken commitments to get returned phone calls, just hung up on, placed on eternal hold waiting for a supervisor and then just got disconnected. I desperately need my tv to work & the use of my internet. Assurance Wireless I presume is getting paid from my Lifeline benefit. Do or can I switch to a different internet provider immediately? I do not intend to continually waste my time on this issue.

I would like To keep my free phone service with assurance wireless, but get internet service with a different provider to be able to continue taking advantage of my lifeline benefit.

I no longer want their service (actually lack of service). This is one of the worst companies to do business with. I only want to cancel my account and move on. I no longer want a lifeline phone.

I have (or had) a free government cellphone through Assurance Wireless (California Life Line). I have tried four times to cancel my account. One phone rep finally said he would cancel it, but Assurance keeps trying to keep me as a customer. They just attempted to send me another free government cellphone (which had been opened by someone …at the Post office?). I refused it and did a return to sender. My old phone is still completely shut off.

I just got a letter from Assurance saying my free phone will be discontinued if I don’t use it. So, I am curious…If some spammer calls the number (even though it’s off) does that still keep the number active?

And finally, are these companies getting money from the government and is that why they are all so aggressive (or dishonest) and are difficult to get rid of? Thank you for creating this general information website. It is really helpful.

Good question, Chris. If your free government cell phone is completely turned off/shut down, spam calls cannot be received and you’ll be safe.

We are going to assume you are correct about the reason it is so difficult to get an account cancelled. Government spending on the program is down considerably and it seems to have become remarkably difficult to get an account cancelled. We’re not saying every company is guilty, but enough of them are based on our readers comments.

You absolutely cannot get a free government cell phone from Verizon. How about if you try it and then get back to us on how that worked out.

Here’s a direct quote cut-and-pasted from the Verizon website: “If you qualify for the Lifeline discount service, you are eligible to receive a reduced rate on your Verizon monthly bill.”

          Reduced rate, Dale, not free.

Safelink originally operated on all three major wireless service providers. Verizon bought Tracfone which has Safelink as a MVNO subscriber. Verizon is in the process of migrating the Safelink customers to their network. So, by your deductive reasoning, Lifeline is connected to Safelink which is connected to Tracfone which is connected to Verizon., So Verizon is ultimately connected to Lifeline. You can reasonably assume that, but the Verizon direct customers are not Lifeline subscribers that will get free service plus a free phone. They are only eligible for a reduced rate Verizon plan. Customers who enroll with Safelink are not Verizon direct customers.

Note that Verizon is offering a free replacement phone for Safelink customers who are still on the 3G network.
          ———————————————————————
“Verizon Offering Free Phone Upgrades to 3G Customers
          Posted March 04, 2022
Verizon is offering a free phone upgrade to Safelink, Tracfone, and Straight Talk wireless customers.

If you are using an older 3G wireless phone, your phone service will end soon due to the shutdown of the underlying network, and you will not be able to make or receive calls, including emergency calls or call to 911.

Verizon asks customers to check to see if you need an upgrade by texting MIGRATE to 611611”
          ——————————————————
So, Verizon is giving away a free 4G phone to Safelink subscribers with a 3G phone. But, that has nothing to do with Lifeline.

The latest one being that I had to order a new phone after getting a new SIM card for my old one rendering it not compatible with their up graded system! I ordered it Aprl 3 because I have no phone and they haven’t even shipped it yet. All the lifeline program did was give me excuses for qlink! I tried canceling my phone order and cannot do that. God knows calling them and beput on hours of hold and asking for a call back and not being called back is extremely frustrating! Any suggestions of what I can do to get this resolved?

After 3 days of calling and at least a total of 12 hours on hold to be told that I had to order a new phone to replace one that worked perfect until quick cut my service. Ordered new phone 7 days ago and it hasn’t even been shipped yet! So hard to deal with all this stress, no phone, and an 88 year old mom that can not reach me if she needs me!

You can get both simultaneously. The programs are completely independent and having an account with one does not exclude you from having an account with the other.

Depending on how long you have been a customer, or what side of the bed your customer service rep got up on, they may give you a replacement phone. Some companies offer a replacement phone every year, others don’t. Contact your service provider’s customer service team to find out what they’ll offer.

I have not used my Qlink Wireless phone/benefits at all since activation (I was approved/activated mid-July 2020), and they have not cancelled my service. Still receiving “usage emails” showing no use at all. As of today, I reached out to them and request they cancel due to my phone not being compatible with their network SIM card. Point is, they should have canceled me at 30 days due to non-use.

Qlink basically told me that UPS delivered the phone and that someone has been using it. WOW! NOT me…… then they give me the run around when I try to cancel my account!

For a year now I have been trying to cancel my q-link service. All attempts have failed! Talk about a large scale rip off. This is ridiculous. I have informed my congressman about the problem and he too feels it should be looked into. He assures me he will do so. He told me that a considerable number of people have talked to him about the problem and will get to the bottom of this. If you are reading this I want contacted at once with the information on how to cancel this service. I just called the customer service number again and was told something on the order of “congratulations you have reinstated your q-link service for another year.” I keep getting messages from q-link that if I don’t use my phone at least once each thirty days it will be canceled. What a joke, I haven’t used it in almost a year and now I’m told I have it for another year. You people sure don’t want to loose the ability to collect for the phone. I’d really like to know just where the money you collect for my phone goes. There are a couple of other people who also would like to know.

Unfortunately, the Lifeline internet program has gone from an exciting development to nearly dead. The only way you can have Lifeline internet is if you get it as part of your phone contract. None of the low-income internet plans available have anything to do with Lifeline, so you should be safe enrolling in a free government cell phone plan.

I just want to officially and legally make sure my account is closed and I no it isn’t because my real cell phone service is willing to take off like 11 dollars a month off my bill and that is awesome unlimited talk and text and 9gb of 4lte for 29.00 a month sure will take it but it keeps coming up I’m with Q LINK ! EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NO SERVICE AND IT SAYS IT’S BEEN CANCELED! PLZ HELP. I’ve even sent them a message telling then to uninroll me. Q link sucks I never had this problem with the other people I went threw I was with them for like 5 years. But now I have no service can’t use the phone but they arnt canceling my contact our whatever it is

I have been with Qlink since Dec, 2016, the phone they sent has not worked in over 4 months. Every time I called to cancel they would not let me cancel nor would they allow me to transfer, but On Dec 3rd I was somehow automatically re-enrolled for a new phone, new number and service when I called numerous times to cancel and they refused. Now after making a fuss about the issue to customer service I was able to get it cancelled but they are saying I can’t get any service for another 12 months, is this true?

I just finished a comment to QLink about basically the same issues. If you read the websites different links you will see you could of cancelled before you received phone, which I tried and was lied to. Yes, they’re right with having to stick with that same company, but where was that in our app? And what if the product is not relialable and really never works, should they be able to hold up on the year if their product can’t possibly go through any kind of testing, it would be condemned. Sorry. They got us and I’m sure ALOT more

You can cancel your phone if you’ve had a voice/text-only account for 60 days. If you also have data as part of your plan, you must keep your account for one full year before you are eligible to switch service providers.

There are some exceptions and you can see them at the USAC.org website:

I haven’t made any attempt to keep my phone or recertifiy, yet they won’t cancel it. What’s really interesting is I will receive a mid cycle email showing my minutes going down but usage is always 0. I’m beginning to wonder if Q Link Wireless is committing fraud with my account.

Very interesting, Jeremy. All free government cell phone companies are required by law to cancel your account if it goes unused for 30 days. If you want to have some fun, call customer service and ask for a supervisor. Tell the supervisor that you will file a complaint with the USAC, FCC, and your state public utility commission if they do not cancel your account immediately. Here’s where you can find more info on filing that complaint:

Call and press 5 for tech support. Select the option for having issues with phone. It will tell you to take battery out, blah blah blah, then give you an option to press if that didn’t work. Then FINALLY you will get a live person. I just had to do that to cancel I lost phone with being forced to order a replacement.

You should be able to re-enroll with any other Lifeline free government cell phone provider doing business in your state, Jerry. All Lifeline customers are now required to stay with their service provider for one year.

Cancellation is one thing all the Lifeline service providers want to make as difficult and mysterious as possible. You may need to contact customer service online or by phone to cancel. Or you can simply turn your phone off so it can neither make nor receive any phone calls or texts for 30 days and your account will automatically be canceled. Just make sure you keep it turned off completely.

Why wasn’t my Qlink service disconnected when I transfered to Safelink? I ask what to Do? Possibly mail in equipment, tranfer information, turn off service or something. No one at either services requested, nor required my inquires. Now, I show up as having 2 accounts, and I can not use Qlink bc of no reception. So, wth would I still try ,and loose a a loosing batter. I have tried to disconnect service, get emails bc I don’t use Qlink phone. I use my safelink number.

It would be better if you are able to contact QLink and officially cancel your service. If you do not get satisfaction from a Q Link service rep, ask to speak to a supervisor.

However, if you still can’t get your Q Link service canceled, you can always shut off your Q Link phone so that it can neither send nor receive texts nor make or receive phone calls. The new Lifeline rules say that a customer’s service will automatically be canceled if they do not use their phone for 30 days.

Is the phone turned on, Candy? If so, shut it off and leave it off for 30 days or more. The rules of the program say that your account will be canceled if you neither send nor receive calls or texts for 30 days. But make sure you leave the phone off (powered down) for at least 30 days.

Alternately, you can also contact Q Link customer service to get your account canceled.

I tried to call the service to ask about canceling, but my phone is so crappy it wont keep a connection. So my question is, can I get in trouble for not canceling this phone? I dont want to go through the trouble of canceling it, if I dont have to…. Please let me know what will happen if I dont cancel it. I may still use it for texting but it’s never been good for calling anyway. It’s the worst phone I ever used, but hey cant complain it was free, lol. But please help me with my question if you can. PS- I will probably buy another phone within 30 days. Can I just throw this one in the trash at that point, (Assumng I never cancel it)

You won’t get in any real trouble (although it’s possible that you could be charged with fraud). But you will not be able to use your phone beyond the anniversary date of when you first signed up, because your account will be cancelled if you do not re-certify.

But we urge you to cancel your account so that someone who really needs the service can be helped.

Believe me, i’m trying to cancel it…the phone is just unusable. So if it comes down to it, in court they will see I made numerous attempts to call and cancel. lol Either way, I dont see how not canceling will affect someone else getting the service? They will still be able to get a service regardless. But I recommend anyone reading this to go to a different company. Safelink is terrible. The phone just doesn’t work 90% of the time. Even texts I have to try 50x sometimes before they go through

Here’s how it impacts someone else: There is a limited amount of money to go around in the Lifeline program, especially now that broadband has been added. So any money the company doesn’t spend on you can be spent on providing service for someone else.

It sounds as if you didn’t tell Q Link that you already had a Lifeline account with Budget when you applied. What you should have done is tell Q Link that you already had that account when you attempted to enroll. In that case, Q Link would have taken care of cancelling your service with Budget.

Call Q Link customer service and ask to speak to a supervisor. You need to make sure you tell them all about your Budget account.

The good news, we assume, is that you no longer need the service. The bad news is that many free government cell phone companies make it much harder to cancel your account than they do to open it. You don’t say who your service provider is, but the first thing you should try to do is to call 6-1-1. That should get your through to your service provider’s customer service team. If that doesn’t work, you should shut your phone off and keep it off for the next 30 or 60 days (depending on the provider). Your account will be automatically cancelled if you neither make nor receive any calls or texts.

If you cancelled your account, you should have been able to sign up for another account as soon as you cancelled. We suppose it’s possible that your service provider was fudging a little in order to keep you on the plan a little longer and to get another month’s subsidy, but we doubt it.

Here’s what we’d do. Find the service provider you want to enroll with (info below). Enroll with that company and it will automatically cancel your other account immediately. Here’s where you can find a list of the companies that make free government cell phones available in your state:

If you can’t get Q Link to resolve your problem (nor even speak to you), it’s easy to switch to a new company. Here’s an article that tells you how to do it:
        https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/faq/how-do-i-switch-lifeline-providers

Which company should you switch to? Look through this list to find a plan (minutes/texts/data/etc) that’s best for you:

Which of these companies do business in your state? Simple to find out. You’ll find a list of them by clicking on this article, then clicking on your state:

Very nice of you to want to return the phone, Corrina. Someone else may be able to use it. However, most companies say the customer can keep the phone.

However, even more important than sending back the phone is cancelling your account. You can contact your service provider’s customer service team and ask to cancel. Your other option would be to turn the phone off and make sure you neither receive or send any calls or texts. If your account is inactive for 60 days it will be automatically cancelled.

Are you saying that you have two Lifeline accounts, Frederick? If so, you’d better disconnect one of them immediately before you get tagged by the USAC’s national data base. If they realize you have multiple accounts you could lose both (or all) of them.

However, FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net cannot help you disconnect. We are an independent website that’s not affiliated with any of the Lifeline Assistance companies. You must contact your service provider in order to cancel your account(s).

You need to tell your phone vendor. Or, just stop using it and after 60 days your account will be canceled.

Call your vendor and cancel. If you don’t remember the company, dial 611. Also, if you don’t want to be on hold for an hour with a company just to cancel, just don’t use it at all for 60 days and it will cancel automatically. And they won’t care about getting the phone back or not.

I have safelink – I went to check status and it says that I was cancelled due to another lifeline enrollment.

I went to several places that have government phones ( ie. Assurance Wireless) and put in my information…it does not have any records from the information provided.

    What should I do?

I lost one of my Lifeline phones and I think someone might have stole it. I don’t remember the name of the provider but I did have two phones. When I was told to cancel one. I was told that the one I am currently using would continue if I did nothing. Well after a few months the one I am using turned off and whenever I try to apply for another. They say that I already have one. So the one that was lost, must be in use by another person and I want to turn that one off. So I can get the one I was using back on or get another one. What should I do?

I am trying to cancel my free 250 minute plan with Q Link Wireless. I cancelled it on August 25, 2014. I was told I applied within 60 days for a lifeline service when I tried to apply for Assurance wireless September 7, 2014. Meanwhile, my phone with Q Link Wireless continues to work. I took the battery out of my phone October 17th and on November 2 I received an email from Quality Assurance that I had used all 250 minutes for the month of November! Remember, the battery for my phone was not even in it! I have been waiting the 60 days that Assurance said I needed to wait to reapply with them from the time of the mysterious application of a lifeline service within 60 days of September 7. I could only assume that since my phone was still working, Q Link Wireless cancelled me and then re-applied me thinking they’d get away with it. Perhaps there is commission involved somehow, but I am very upset and put out of my way and I want this whole mess resolved quickly. Can you suggest how?

I would like to cancel service with one provider that I just started service with in the last 2 days due to a used phone that will not charge and poor customer service. I am unable to reach the provider(Budget Mobile) by phone which I am told via chat that this is the only way to cancel with them. What do I do when this is unsuccessful. These people just don’t answer the phones. Also, I would love to send their phone back, however they do not supply you with a prepaid envelope/box. This is a phone they just sent to me broken! I refuse to pay for the shipment but would love to cancel their service and go with another company. HELP!

How long have you held on the phone? I understand you might have to wait up to an hour. As for canceling, you have to wait until after 60 days of service to cancel.

I want to switch providers from Assurance wireless to Reach out wireless . . . they offer much better services.
My current contract with Assurance runs out in October this year. Do I cancel Assuance then apply to Reachout? I will still be qualified for lifeline service. Also, I live in a deeeeep valley and some cell phones don’t work where I live. If I sign on with Reachout and they sent me a phone that doesn’t work here. . . what do I do?

If my phone is canceled and lost can I re-apply for service again and receive a new phone or can I go to another company with government phones and services that have more minutes. Also, do any phone providers have roll-over minutes?

If you are truly canceled, and the company you canceled with updated the national database, then you can go with another company. As for rollover minutes, read about each program on each provider’s page and if unclear go to their site and read about the terms and conditions.

I, like Amy, want to know if you can cancel one plan and sign w/another that offers more minutes. It takes but just a couple phone calls to the various agencies to eat up your minutes and then you’re SOL if you’re waiting for someone to get back with you, or your kid gets sick at school, or whatever!
