IMPORTANT NOTICE: All references to the Lifeline program have been removed from ClearTalk’s website. Try another company in your state instead.
ClearTalk is another one of those Lifeline Assistance companies that requires a little explanation, because there are really two different ClearTalks. They not only share the same name, they share the same logo, but make no mistake, they are completely different companies.
The ClearTalk that offers free government cell phones as part of the Lifeline Assistance program is ClearTalk of South Carolina. A representative told us, “We share the same brand as ClearTalk Tennessee and South Carolina, however we are not the same company … (The other) ClearTalk that serves Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and California does not offer LifeLine.”
Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s get specific:
You get 250 free minutes per month or for $15/month you can get unlimited talk, text and web. For $25 you can get unlimited nationwide calling and for $30 for you’ll also get unlimited Android data.
That gives you more flexibility if the “standard” 250 minutes of talk or texts is insufficient for your personal needs. ClearTalk makes its plans available at a variety of walk-in locations including wireless stores, convenience stores, beauty shops, pawn shops, and grocery stores.
One thing to keep in mind is that ClearTalk’s geographic footprint is pretty small, not encompassing the entire state. The service is limited to Columbia and Greenville/Spartanburg. But if you live there, check them out.
Finally, we love ClearTalk’s corporate philosophy. As the company says on its website, “Our goals include more than just providing a simple alternative to wireless, we are part of the communities we call home. We strive to service our communities and the people of our communities by helping to make them a better place. Past examples include funding the use of an unused Hospital Wing in Jackson, TN to allow it house victims of Katrina; Reinvented a neglected telecom building with a larger than life aquatic whale mural, making it a local landmark in Jacksonville Beach, FL; Renovating a historic burned-out theatre building in downtown Pocatello, Idaho preserving the historic Bannock Indian Chiefs mosaic entrance and many similar projects. Our work has already begun in Tennessee; projects are in the works to help make our community a better place.”
That’s what Lifeline Assistance is all about — helping people and helping the community.
