Can I give my free government cell phone to friends or family members?

< Back to all FAQ's

In a word, “No!”

There is no problem with letting your friends and family members borrow your free government cell phone, but you cannot let them have it. You cannot enroll in the program with the intent to give the phone to someone else. We are aware that it happens all the time, but it is illegal.

All Lifeline/ACP service providers make this very clear in their Terms & Conditions. The T&Cs usually say something like “This account is non-transferable,” which is legalese for “You can’t get one for your teenage daughter” or “Giving this phone to your deadbeat uncle Larry is prohibited.”

It’s important to carefully read the fine print and understand the terms of your Lifeline/ACP service agreement.

If you have any questions or concerns about canceling your Lifeline/ACP account or about the terms of your service agreement, do yourself a favor and contact your service provider’s customer service team for more information. They should be able to answer any questions you may have.
