What to do if your free government cell phone is lost, stolen or damaged

March 8, 2016

They’ve been flushed down toilets, absent-mindedly left on subways, accidentally smashed by brothers, stolen by burglars, ripped off by ex-girlfriends, and they have vanished into thin air as if by magic.

We get so many questions and comments about lost or stolen free government cell phones that we thought our readers would appreciate a complete rundown of replacement policies for each of the leading service providers. We haven’t reported on this subject for a couple years and many of the companies have changed their policies.

This is the information you need no matter which company provides your Lifeline Assistance service:

LOST OR STOLEN PHONE POLICY.
For any lost or stolen SafeLink Wireless phone, you may request and receive only one replacement phone per customer. The replacement phone will be a refurbished phone. All reported lost and stolen phones will be permanently deactivated. The replacement phone will include only 10 minutes of lost airtime. Any additional airtime that you may have had on your lost phone will not be replaced. In the event you lose your replacement phone or it is stolen, you will need to purchase an additional phone. If a phone is lost or stolen while in transit to the customer before the customer receives the phone, the lost phone and airtime may be replaced as a onetime courtesy in TracFone’s sole discretion.

Two ways: (1) Contact your service provider to find out what replacement phones they offer, (2) Contact your service provider to see if it offers a BYOP – Bring your Own Phone – plan and then purchase exactly the phone you want and use it as your free government cell phone.

I’ve got a phone from Terracom in Granite Okla. It’s been dropped and my screen is badly broken. I don’t get all calls or messages and it’s hard to push the numbers when .making a call. The glass is chipping out and I’m afraid I’m going to get cut. I’ve already pulled little pieces of glass out of my finger. How do I get a replacement phone and what’s the cost? Thank you for your time. In fact when I got back to Tulsa my daughter her boyfriend her daughter and a co worker all went to terracom and switched.

I got a free government phone when I lived in Texas, not sure who the provider was. I then moved to Iowa and my phone didn’t work there. Anyways my phone was lost when I was packing to move to Kansas.
Is there any way to tell which provider I was on and how do I get a replacement phone?

It’s quite likely that your old phone doesn’t work because your former service provider doesn’t offer service in your new state. You can go ahead and enroll with any company that provides service in your state. Here’s where you can find all those plans:

How long were you with Assurance, Jackie? If your service plan included only voice and text, you can switch to a new service provider after 60 days. If it included data, you cannot switch until you have been with that service provider for one year. If you are eligible to switch, here’s an article that will tell you how to do it:

Contact your service provider and ask about its BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) program. They can tell you what kinds of phones are compatible with their network, and then you can go out and purchase an inexpensive phone that meets your specific needs.

I dropped my cool pad phone in the toilet by mistake, and it comes on and it texts messages to me and it lights up. but it won’t slide so I can answer it, I can’t cut it off unless I take the battery out of the phone. Tell me what do I do I’ve put it in rice and I have taken the battery out so it can dry, It’s been dry for 12 months. When I finally put the phone back together it won’t slide but does everything else.

But when I talked to Sprint, I added $10 to buy a new pin for airtime. Ok, this is the second time I’ve bought airtime for this phone, but It’s like a 3 party phone ! When I make a call, I have to enter the phone # twice ! And who ever I call cannot call me back ! Instead it’s a different number that appears on the recieving end. that ph# belongs to somebody else ! What kind of service is this or is Sprint running scam ??? Please help me resolve this issue. You have several options. (1) Contact your service provider’s customer service team. If you’ve been with the company long enough, they may upgrade you for free. But don’t count on it. (2) If they won’t do it for free, they will let you upgrade for a reasonably small upgrade fee. (3) You can always switch to a different Lifeline free government cell phone company. That would make you a new customer and all new customers are supposed to get free smartphones.

A couple things, Amanda. The new rules of the Lifeline free government cell phone program say that your account will be terminated if your phone goes unused for 30 days or longer. So the odds are that your account has already been cancelled.

But on the off chance it hasn’t, there’s only one way to figure out which service provider you had. Go to this link and click on your state:

      https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/states

Start at the top and call each of the companies one after another. Your service provider will be able to identify you by your name, address, social security number, phone number, etc.

There’s only one way to figure out who your service provider is, Frances, and it will require a little homework on your part. First, go to this link:

      https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/states

Click on the name of your state to find a complete list of service providers in your state. You’ll need to begin at the top of the list and contact customer service at that company. They’ll be able to figure out if you are one of their customers based on the phone number, your name, address, social security number, etc.

If that company says you’re not one of their customers, you need to move down the list and contact each company one by one until you find the one that provides your service.

Did they actually say that you already have a phone or did they say that someone at your address has a phone? It’s not unusual for one person to get rejected because a previous resident at your address had a phone. Contact whoever you spoke to before and ask them to check the name on the National Lifeline Assistance Database. The database is supposed to help clear up these problems.

I had truconnect to begin with. When my phone broke I called customer service. There was no charge for replacement. But it could take up to 60 days. Day 61 I called and was given the run around. Day 65 I finally reached someone with half a brain and was assured phone would be mailed. Day 70 my phone arrived. It wasn’t a smartphone .like I had to begin with and to top it off, the phone did not work. When I called they informed me they didn’t have to replace my phone with the same phone. I told them that was all well and fine but I believed they did have to replace it with a phone that worked. They said they did and hung up. Needless to say I changed service.

If they told you that you were ineligible for a replacement phone, you can buy your own phone, Marston, but you need to make sure the phone you purchase is compatible with the Access network BEFORE you buy it. But it’s much simpler to purchase an upgraded phone directly from Access. You can find all the models they make available on their website.

Go to the Access website. Click on “Customer Support” and then on “Contact Us” and you’ll reach an email for that will allow you to contact Access customer service. It’s a terrible system that makes it as difficult as possible for customers to actually get in touch with a live person, but it’s the only method that’s available.

Turned out it that his battery charger was broken. Check eBay or Amazon for an inexpensive battery charger. Or take it into a store that sells that model phone to see if it will charge there.

They seem to cant enter my file because my address and name does not match! I’m so upset because the day I sign up, the lady who entered my information used my California Identification Card and welfare card so I don’t know why I should be put in this situation to have a problem to enter my account. I don’t have my papers or box no more so I don’t understand why your system would say something else when I wasn’t the one who entered my information, it was your employees who did! I’m very irritated right now!!

I think it is so nice to have so many telephone services that offer free telephone service to low income individuals, that may not be able to afford service, this type of service puts a phone in the hands of every household that desire to have their own phone service, and just could not otherwise afford another bill. Thank God for the person that came up with this kind of service in mind. it is not everyone that thinks about the poor .But the Bible says the poor we will have with us always.
