There’s a website we both love and hate. We won’t even mention its name because we don’t want to give them any unwarranted publicity.
We hate them because they condemn the Lifeline program and everyone who participates in it as deadbeats and welfare cheats.
We love them because they finally seem to have seen the light and have linked to FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net and told their readers to visit us if they are truly in need of Lifeline assistance.
And that leads us a story we saw on that website today. It’s an actual police incident report carried in an Eastern North Carolina newspaper:
The following incidents were reported by the Kinston Department of Public Safety and the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office:
… On June 9, a woman on Norline Drive, La Grange, reported someone broke into her residence and stole the following: A Dell computer valued at $200; a 50″ Panasonic flatscreen TV valued at $1,000; a Wii game system valued at $250; an RCA stereo system valued at $100; a Belkin wireless router valued at $70; a Safe Link cell phone valued at $0.
While we can’t say for sure that this person is participating in fraud, as the website suspected. But having all the electronic goodies and a Lifeline telephone, it seems to be a reasonable assumption.
This wonderful program is intended for people who are truly in need. And it seems to us that if you can afford to own a “50-inch Panasonic flatscreen TV valued at $1,000, a Wii game system valued at $250, an RCA stereo system valued at $100 and a Belkin wireless router valued at $70”, you don’t need a free a Safe Link cell phone valued at $0.
We urge all our readers to use the Lifeline program honestly and correctly. Do not take advantage of this fine program to take advantage of the people who pay for it.

I am writing out of concern…I attempted to assist a close friend in signing up for a safelink phone… Her application was rejected stating she already has a lifeline account which she does not. If there is someone else with a lifeline under her sopcial security number, we would like to have it invalidated so as she can get a phone…She is an elderly individual with no email, no computer and lives in the middle of the desert. I have all her info to try and get her certified as she canot do it and when calling Safelink, you just get a voice generated message…no real person to speak with….and their technical support could not help….
Someone says
Whatever state your in, will have the information on that. She might have been getting a reduction on her local phone bill, which lifeline will do. You can’t have both.

I have been in a nursing home for three years and get $60 dollars per month to spend as I see fit. It doesn’t go far, so when I heard about the free service I jumped at it. And instead, I landed in a suspect
group of businesses that require you to enroll before you can find out anything. This set off my BS alarm so I found a site which grades the major players and what I found was a nightmare of disappointment and dissatisfaction with their experience in relying on these companies. I guess, since it’s free, what the hell, what else have I got to do? Play Bingo? it doesn’t feel honest. It feels like a scam.

I know I had problems contacting safelink. You can call tracfone and tell them you have a safelink account and they should be able to help you. If you contact safelink choose one of the options like report it lost, update, etc.. this should help you get to a live person, rather then an automated machine. Then tell the person what you want or like to do. As far as Assurance Wireless, being apart of Sprint’s network doesn’t surprize me for some reason, I feel the service is below standards, rude support, and phones are cheap or junk. The mintues don’t roll over and the phones choices even paylo phones are horrible. For visual impair and elderly it is hard to see the menu and hear calls. Although Safelink may be hard to get in touch with until you figure it out, overall, the phones and service is much better.

Jim, please don,t use thiis as a forum to support your bullshit. Its abvious and cheap. Go back to selling used cars.
Very truly,
Guy @ SafeLink Wireless

Yes, this a great program for those who really need it. However, there are some people whom attempt to defraud the program by applying for both Safelink and Assurance Wireless. Bad APPLES like these give everyone a bad repretation. There are those honest deserving people who benifit from this program. Think twice scum who obtain both of these programs, because, I also know once it catches up to you and it will…. your bad behavior shall disqualify you. By fudging the application can place all your Federal and State benifits at risk, not only for you—but your whole household.

I would like to find anyone who has information on contacting a “HUMAN” voice at Safelink to report a fraudulent use of an address to obtain a phone. I applied and was told a phone was already issued to my address and therefore I was denied. I also was told they would investigate and deny service to whomever was using my address. Today I receive a card authorizing more minutes for this unknown phone owner. Attempts to contact Safelink has resulted in pressing one number after another to hear a recorded voice, and no satisfaction in resolving this issue. Any help to my e-mail address would be a blessing. Thanks ahead of time for any help. Jim

I must echo the above posters. I have several nice things – a large TV, a Wii and a nice computer. These were all purchased when I was the stay-at-home wife and part-time bookkeeper and married. When my spouse left and left me with a new baby and mortgage to pay, I was left penniless. However the amount I would get from pawning these items is so small that it isn’t worth it. So I exercise on my Wii on rainy days, use my computer to take online classes to get a better job and grow as much food as I can to make my food stamps go further.
A lifeline cell would reduce my bills by $10 to $35 a month (depending on if the service reaches my house so I can cancel my landline) and would make my childcare provider happy – as I’m required to carry a cell when I go to my in person classes.

Just because someone has things does not mean they are cheating the system.. I myself has been a hardworking Citizen. I myself @ this date and time is applying for the free cell phone I am very grateful that the there is something. . I lost my Job over 3 months ago. So you telling me everything I worked hard for makes me a bad person because I need help now? I paid hard earned Taxes for over 20 years Yes Tv’s, game, xbox I have children which they got it from their Fathe which I am divorced! I lots of things and yes I tried to have garage sale to earn some income when down and out looks like community is hurting because people didn’t buy my ” NICE THINGS” I am disgusted how people assume things and make it their business when it’s not thier business. I know This program is excellent! My cell phone shut off I have to have a phone number on application for a Job . Thank God For Free Cell phone for people with low income and no income .

So you just sit on your azz look for another job Micky D’s is always looking for workers ! ,

yes its definitely not right to judge i lost my job about 6 months ago and from the outside looking in you couldn’t tell because i have a good husband thats keeping me a float. REMEMBER YOU CAN’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER
noni says
I’d be very careful who I judged. For all we know, those items were gifts or belonged to roommates or other family members. The router might have been leased to her by the phone company. The wii might have been a gift to her kids from family. Unless you know someone’s situation for sure, it’s really unfair to call them out on unproven charges. I know a woman whose father bought her a coach purse for her birthday several years ago, but she was skipping meals and lost her house trying to feed her kids after her husband left her. But all anyone sees is that she uses an EBT card and has Coach, therefore she must be cheating the system. That’s not fair, and that sort of thinking stigmatizes the people who are temporarily down on their luck.
