More cash-strapped students now eligible for free government cell phones and cheap internet

February 6, 2012

free government phones college studentsAmerica’s students are struggling. Tuition is skyrocketing across the country. The cost of food is shooting up. Gasoline is more expensive than ever. It seems like everything costs more.

As a result, more students are signing up for food stamps, which automatically qualifies them for free government cell phones and low-income internet programs.

According to CBS-TV Atlanta, an increasing number of college students are signing up for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, more commonly known as food stamps.

“I did not even know that I was applicable for food stamps until someone told me about the site and to apply to see if I would get it,” said senior Taylor Smith. “Since then, I have saved a ton of money.

What’s not so commonly known is that participation in the food stamp program automatically qualifies students for free government cell phones and cheap internet programs.

“College students are eligible,” Ravae Graham, Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs and Communications for Georgia’s Department of Human Services said about food stamps. “And there has been a significant increase of use in the program over recent years.”

Eligibility requirements for food stamps vary slightly from state to state, but include income standards and, often, work requirements. While the food stamp program was originally designed help families, many students also qualify.

“One of the primary ways to qualify for the free government cell phone and cheap internet programs is by participating in another government aid program,” said Mark Henry, editor of FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net and CheapInternet.com. “If you get food stamps, you can also get a free cell phone and virtually free internet access.”

The free government cell phone and cheap internet programs are part of a program named Lifeline, which is designed to bridge the digital divide in America.

Students can get a free cell phone and 250 free minutes per month. They can also get high speed broadband internet service for just $9.95 per month and a home computer for as little as $150. “Life would be much easier for college students if they knew about these programs,” Henry added.

“FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net and CheapInternet.com are the leading sources of that information.”

Assuming that your qualify, you need to enroll with one of the companies offering phones in your state, Joseph. Here’s where you can find them:

Be aware in advance, though, that the odds of getting the latest, greatest iPhone or Samsung phone are pretty low. You will probably get a much cheaper refurbished phone unless you have the money to purchase your own phone that you can bring to the program.

All of the companies on Cheapinternet.com require you to have a school-aged child in the Federal School Lunch program. College students do not qualify for that. Please advise if there is a company that services the Wichita/Derby Kansas area for college students. Thank you.

Im in my fourth year of college attempting to get my bachelors degree in business management at Texas A & M. Due to recent changes in my family’s financial status, due to my mothers renal failure I will be in need of assistance this year. My mothers gradual decline in health has dropped my family’s income to a single income from my father I will be on my own as far as financial responsibility as a student to lessen the burden on my father, I am seeking any assistance you would graciously grant me as I continue my schooling and asist caring for my mother. Sincerely John Harwell
