We realize not everyone who comes to FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net may qualify for a government-subsidized free cell phone, so we’re always on the lookout for new, creative ways for our readers to get phones and service as inexpensively as possible. Republic Wireless got our attention recently when it began offering unlimited talk, unlimited text and unlimited data beginning at just $5 per month. The only catch is that they require you to purchase their internet-ready cell phones at market prices.
But oh what a cell phone they’re offering. The company just announced that it is now offering the hot, new Motorola MotoX for just $299. (Until now, Republic was in beta testing and only offered an Android Defy XT for $99.)
Republic is charging $299 (plus taxes and fees) for the Moto X, but they offer it with no long-term contract required. In fact, you could sign up for a Republic plan one day and cancel it the next day if that’s what you wanted to do.
We’re the first to admit that Republic’s plans aren’t perfect for everyone looking for free government cell phones. But it’s still one hell of a bargain for those who want more from their cell phone plan.
Let’s talk about the cell phone first. Like we said, Republic’s unlocked Moto X costs $299. But before you say that’s too expensive, consider what they cost anywhere else. The cheapest one we could find on amazon.com was priced at $565 and others were priced over $600. Kind of makes that $299 sounds like a bargain, doesn’t it?
Here’s how Republic describes the phone on its website, “… our version comes with all the great features of the Moto X — like Active Display, Touchless Control, Quick Capture Camera, & Long Battery Life — along with the added benefit of our Hybrid Calling Technology to give you more coverage in more places using WiFi and a nationwide cellular network for all your talk, text, and data needs.”
Now let’s talk about Republic’s remarkable monthly plans:
The $5 per month plan: There’s only one word to accurately describe this plan — cheap. You get unlimited voice, unlimited text and unlimited data. The catch? This is one of Republic’s wifi-only plan. That means all your calls, all your texts, all your data must be accessed via wifi signals. If you live and work in a wifi rich environment and are willing to trade occasional inability to find a wifi signal for all that the plan offers, this could be perfect for you.
The $10 per month plan: For an additional $5 per month, this Republic plan offers cellular access, but only for unlimited talk and unlimited texting. It also includes unlimited data, but only via wifi.
The $25 per month plan: If you’re willing to pay a little more, you can get a little more from Republic. This plan gives you unlimited talk, unlimited text and unlimited data via both wifi and 3G cellular.
The $40 per month plan: This one’s the big daddy of Republic’s plans. It gives you unlimited 4G cellular including Sprint LTE (where available).
Here’s how Republic’s wifi/cellular hybrid technology works: When you can get a wifi signal the Moto X phone figures out if it’s strong enough and if not it automatically flips you to the Sprint cellular network. The switch is transparent to you. You probably won’t notice the difference unless you check out the green on-screen indicator.
As we said earlier, the Republic Wireless program may not be right if you’re looking for a free cell phone program. But lots of those programs are available on this website. But if you are willing to pay a little more to get a lot more, Republic and their new Moto X phone may be exactly what you need.

We strongly urge our readers NOT to enroll at street events. They have been the scenes of far too much fraud and abuse. You’re much safer enrolling online or by phone.

I switched to Republic Wireless a few months back from Verizon. They were killing me with the monthly charges. Around $120 a month. Verizon does have the best 4G coverage. I won’t deny that. I got the Republic plan for $25 a month. Unlimited calls, text and data with 3G. I dont have the 4G on my plan. It takes a few seconds longer for the internet to load compared to Verizon. But for $100 a month savings its well worth it. If you get the 4G with Republic remember you might not have use of it except in large cities. Im completely happy with the plan I have. I have no dropped calls. The switch from wifi to Sprint 3G is seamless. Those commercials for Verizon that show the map show the 4G map coverage only and 3G is pretty much everywhere so their ads are really misleading. It works great. Get the Moto X phone and not the Defy (it sucks). The Moto X rocks. Yes, you will have to pay $299 for the phone upfront but it pays for itself in a few months. Do the math and figure out your yearly cost compared with your current plan. Even if you have to pay an early termination fee it will save you money over the next year or two. I have a link that you can use to save $19 for the first month. Yes, it helps me with my bill too when you do. I won’t lie. For Christmas bonus my boss decided to let most of us go and I am unemployed. If you don’t like Republic, there is no contract. Just switch back. It is a great company.
Here is the link. Cut and paste if it needed. Thanks!!
