Get a free government cell phones thanks to the world’s richest man

March 18, 2013

Carlos Slim SafelinkForbes magazine recently unveiled its annual list of the world’s wealthiest people. This year the list featured a record 1,426 billionaires. And the richest of them all is Carlos Slim, the Mexican mogul who is now worth an astounding $73 billion.

What you may not have known is that America’s free government cell phone program, and the low income Americans who benefit from it, owe a huge debt of gratitude to Mr. Slim.

In the words of Forbes, “Pan-Latin American mobile telecom outfit America Movil remains his most valuable holding at $36.3 billion; the company spread its wings to Europe in the past year, buying pieces of Dutch telecom company KPN and Telekom Austria.”

The Slim family own America Movil, Latin America’s largest mobile phone company, which in turn owns Safelink Wireless, the largest company competing in America’s free government cell phone program. As America Movil said on its website, “According to reports of beneficial ownership of our shares filed with the SEC on March 1, 2010, Carlos Slim Helú, together with his sons and daughters (together, the “Slim Family”), may be deemed to control us through their beneficial ownership held by a trust and another entity and their direct ownership of shares.”

Complex? Of course. For better or worse, that’s the way business deals get structured in today’s world.

But the bottom line is that Carlos Slim, the world’s richest man, has made a considerable investment in the free government cell phone business. Thanks to his farsighted business acumen, millions of low income Americans are able to enjoy the benefits of the Lifeline Assistance program.

That makes it easier for them to contact potential employers and land jobs that will lift them up out of poverty. That makes it easier for them to find and communicate with medical professionals. That makes it easier for them to communicate with friends and families, which is so important in today’s dangerous world. And, finally, that makes it possible for them to reach early responders in case of emergencies.

We have just one word for Mr. Carlos Slim:

Gracias, Mr. Slim. Gracias.

Thanks to the Slim family for thanking about us. I would like to know why SAFELINK is going to disconnect my services if I don’t purchase another phone, cause they’re switching over to another company and the cell phone they issued me isn’t compatible to the new program. We’re going through a terrible pandemic and I’m on a fixed income I can not afford a new phone, I need my same phone number for all my doctor’s, dentist, social security disability and emergency contacts has this number, it will take a lot to change all of this after so many years…. PLEASE HELP

Very unusual, Stephanie. You might want to consider switching to another service provider. You’ll be considered a new customer and qualify for a free smart phone, and if you tell them you want to “port over my current phone number,” you’ll be able to keep your same phone number. Here’s an article that tells you exactly how to make the switch:

Yes, If you qualify, you can also get a free government cell phone. The two programs are completely unrelated, so being a participant in one does not disqualify you from qualifying for the other.

But please be aware that there are a number of other low-income internet plans in addition to Access from AT&T. Before you enroll with any plan, you owe it to yourself to check out all the other to find out if another one fits your needs better than Access. Here’s where you can find them all:

This is the worst service I have every been with. It may be free but the customer care service people treat you so bad. They don’t even know how to warm transfer their customers so they don’t have to continue telling the next person the same information over and over again. I bought on of their unlimited plan less month they change me twice for the same amount, but did not give me service for this month and made me used up my minutes. I was on another phone of mine for over 2 hours trying to get my phone back on because on July 3, 2018 they charge my account twice. They told me they will turn on my phone and it been over 2 hour and they say it take 5 minute and I still don’t have service. I have no way of calling them no more, because they use up my minutes on another person phone I borrow. Do not but their Unlimited Service plan, if you do watch your bank account and make sure they don’t double charge you. If you get a double charge call them right them and get your refund. Because you can not pay two months in a row. Two payment at one time.

Thank you for your service and keeping America safe and free, I’m sorry you were injured and I believe that our veterans shouldn’t have to worry about quality healthcare and the necessities to live without having to fight harder for your needs than you did protecting our lives.
Almost all of the men in my family have served also, so I was raised respecting the sacrifice that you and your family made.

Maybe. If your service plan includes only voice and text, you can switch service providers after you’ve been with Q Link for 60 days. If your plan includes data, you can switch after one year. Here’s an article that tells you how to switch:

How long have you been with Safelink, Melissa? Depending on what kind of plan you have, you may be eligible to switch to a different company, which would make you a new customer, and also make you eligible for a new smart phone. Here’s an article that tells you how easy it is to switch:

safe link wireless was the most difficult company to work with. if you do not speak spanish – forget it.

received the phone but have no idea how to operate it. so??????????what am I supposed to do??????
I gave it to my aid who is from the Dominican Republic and of course speaks spanish. I also gave her the box with all the papers that came with the phone.

i had hoped she could/would show me how to use the cell phone. = that did not happen.
I asked her to return the phone but instead of getting my cell phone back she gave me a tracfone.
again I have no idea what I have to do to use this item.

what am I to do? would appreciate some cs. to answer my questions in English. Also was just told that I did not use my phone for one call per month. Of course not, I no longer have the phone = so????????

great idea for people such as myself who is on Medicaid, Food Stamps and SSD but without cs support it is useless for me.my home landline phone is 845-544-2085. I also purchased a Great Call flip phone for
use but can I use this in lieu of the cell phone safe link provides?

so many questions but no answers. I am now paying $30 mo for my flip phone from cricket. that money is much needed for other necessities.

I am VERY UNHAPPY with the poor cs from Safe Link Wireless. Time for me to contact Soc Services????
someone must do something to resolve all my questions.

Here’s one solution: Go online and do a Google search for the make and model of your phone and the words “user manual.” You’ll easily find the manual and should be able to look up the answers to your questions. Good luck, Ruth.

We’re preparing an article about a relatively unknown organization that provides high speed internet to seniors and it’s qualification requirements are much broader than the other programs we cover. So keep checking back here at FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net for that article.

We are unaware of any program that offers iPads, but most of the free government cell phone companies offer smart phones as upgrades for a reasonably low price.

I have a blu dash jr. android touchscreen phone that came from TruConnect. It offers unlimited talk, text and seems to have begun giving away data for internet access. (check on that, it may have been a glitch or a one time thing just to be sure.) If you have neighborhood wi-fi access, it can be had free in large population cities. Hope that helps to help you get what you are looking for.

You should be able to get a replacement at no cost if you notify your phone provider that the phone has gone missing. If you do not report it, you are allowing someone else to use your phone, to use your minutes, and that is not what is intended by the program,. Your phone is for you, not for some slick person who now enjoys your free phone time. Notify the phone provider so they can turn the phone off, and give you a replacement..
