Sage Telecom Lifeline Discount Cell Phones

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Sage Telecom is now part of TruConnect, which only offers Lifeline cell phones in California and Texas.

Sage Telecom is now offering Lifeline Discounts to financially-struggling residents of 11 states. You might want to consider Sage if you are a resident of Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, or Wisconsin. The plans and discounts may vary slightly from state to state, so we recommend contacting Sage to figure out what you’re entitled to in your state.

Sage offers inexpensive, traditional monthly plans and prepaid plans:

Monthly cell plans start at just $15 per month and include: a free cell phone; nationwide coverage; no contracts, free talk time; free caller ID, call waiting, and voicemail; free or discounted text messages, and inexpensive data options.

Prepaid cell phone plans also start at just $15 per month and include: free cell phone; nationwide coverage; no contracts or credit checks; free caller ID, call waiting, and voicemail; talk and text included; inexpensive data options, and international calls as low as 8¢.

And those low prices DON’T include the Lifeline Discounts. Add them in (or perhaps we should say “subtract them out”) and the monthly cost is next to nothing.

Do you qualify for a Lifeline Discount?

Just as Lifeline Discounts may vary from state to state, so do the the eligibility requirements. In general, however, you must be able to provide proof that your household income is at or less than 135% of federal poverty guidelines (150% in some states) or that you participate in a government assistance program, such as: Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps or SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Federal Public House Assistance (Section 8), Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), National School Lunch Program’s Free Lunch Program, Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance, Tribally-Administrered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TTANF), Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), Head Start (if income eligibility criteria are met), or another State assistance program (depending on the state).

The Sage website spells out the philosophy that has made the company so successful:

It is plain and simple. We encourage you to call us any time you have a question, or any time we can improve your phone or Internet service experience. You will find prompt, courteous, genuine folks who are here to help you. This is what separates Sage from other phone companies, and it is why we know you will enjoy having Sage deliver your phone and Internet service.

… Sage has been around since 1998, when we created our simple, low-priced phone plans as an alternative to the big guys. Now Sage serves hundreds of thousands of customers. We may have grown quite a bit, but our values haven’t changed. We still aim to help our customers stay connected for less.

Finally, we can’t conclude the Sage story without mentioning the company’s generous referral program.

Sage will give you a $25 credit on your account every time you refer a friend or family member to Sage and they stay with us for at least 90 days. Just make sure that anyone you refer mentions your name and phone number when they open an account.
