If you’ve never heard of FreedomPop, take notice of the name. We predict that you’ll be hearing a lot about the company in the future because it has a huge hit on its hands. The company began testing its unique free cell phone plan a little more than two weeks ago, but news of the program spread so rapidly that all the phones sold out in less than 48 hours.
According to NewsForShoppers.com, Tony Miller, FreedomPop’s Head of Marketing and Communications, said the company is analyzing input from its first customers and will soon be back with more phones.
“We have lot more demand than supply for initial beta,” Miller stated. ”Over 100,000 people are in line. We will be opening up limited quantities in a flash sale style, 5,000 at a time, on a first come first serve basis, emailing those who have already expressed interest to get first jump on the flash sale.”
In case you are not yet familiar with FreedomPop’s unique program, here are the basics:
When you sign up for FreedomPop’s free smartphone program, you get free 200 minutes of talk time, up to 500 free text messages, 500MB of free 3G/4G data.
But those aren’t the only options. If your needs exceed what’s offered in FreedomPop’s free plans, you can choose between two very inexpensive calling plans:
• The $7.99/month plan includes 500 minutes of talk time, unlimited texting, and 500MB of data
• The $10.99/month plan includes unlimited talk time, unlimited texts, and 500MB of data.
Each of the three plans include unlimited calling and texts between FreedomPop subscribers.
The fly in the ointment? You can’t use your current smartphone with the FreedomPop programs. Your only option is getting an HTC EVO phone directly from FreedomPop, but the company makes that very affordable, too, by selling refurbished ones for just $99.
As time goes on, FreedomPop says it will add a range of additional phones to their offerings, and that you’ll eventually be able to use your own compatible devices (Update: they did it).
Miller notes that he uses the FreedomPop phone plan and says, “It works quite well. I’ve kind of forgotten it is a ‘freedom phone’ and just use it, which I guess is the point, ie: I’m using cool Android phone with a free plan.”
How can FreedomPop offer free cell phone service when other cell phone companies charge so much? Simple. Instead of using the industry standard telephone lines used by other cell phone companies, FreedomPop transmit its calls over the internet.
Our website is called FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net and this program isn’t quite free because you have to pay for the cell phone itself. But the service is free and we’ve already heard lots of great feedback about the program. So if you think your current cell phone plan is too expensive, the new FreedomPop program is certainly worth a look.
