If you’ve never heard of FreedomPop, take notice of the name. We predict that you’ll be hearing a lot about the company in the future because it has a huge hit on its hands. The company began testing its unique free cell phone plan a little more than two weeks ago, but news of the program spread so rapidly that all the phones sold out in less than 48 hours.
According to NewsForShoppers.com, Tony Miller, FreedomPop’s Head of Marketing and Communications, said the company is analyzing input from its first customers and will soon be back with more phones.
“We have lot more demand than supply for initial beta,” Miller stated. ”Over 100,000 people are in line. We will be opening up limited quantities in a flash sale style, 5,000 at a time, on a first come first serve basis, emailing those who have already expressed interest to get first jump on the flash sale.”
In case you are not yet familiar with FreedomPop’s unique program, here are the basics:
When you sign up for FreedomPop’s free smartphone program, you get free 200 minutes of talk time, up to 500 free text messages, 500MB of free 3G/4G data.
But those aren’t the only options. If your needs exceed what’s offered in FreedomPop’s free plans, you can choose between two very inexpensive calling plans:
• The $7.99/month plan includes 500 minutes of talk time, unlimited texting, and 500MB of data
• The $10.99/month plan includes unlimited talk time, unlimited texts, and 500MB of data.
Each of the three plans include unlimited calling and texts between FreedomPop subscribers.
The fly in the ointment? You can’t use your current smartphone with the FreedomPop programs. Your only option is getting an HTC EVO phone directly from FreedomPop, but the company makes that very affordable, too, by selling refurbished ones for just $99.
As time goes on, FreedomPop says it will add a range of additional phones to their offerings, and that you’ll eventually be able to use your own compatible devices (Update: they did it).
Miller notes that he uses the FreedomPop phone plan and says, “It works quite well. I’ve kind of forgotten it is a ‘freedom phone’ and just use it, which I guess is the point, ie: I’m using cool Android phone with a free plan.”
How can FreedomPop offer free cell phone service when other cell phone companies charge so much? Simple. Instead of using the industry standard telephone lines used by other cell phone companies, FreedomPop transmit its calls over the internet.
Our website is called FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net and this program isn’t quite free because you have to pay for the cell phone itself. But the service is free and we’ve already heard lots of great feedback about the program. So if you think your current cell phone plan is too expensive, the new FreedomPop program is certainly worth a look.

Can you have 2 phones in same house hold? Do you have unlimited text for free also?
Free Government Cell Phones says
You “can” have two free government cell phones in the same household, but it requires an exception to the rules. You must live separately and pay all your own expenses.

My experience with FreedomPop is it is the worst thing out there for cell phone use. You have to have the screen unlocked and the app open to make or receive calls. I could be looking for my phone by calling it over and over. Nothing. Then I slide my hand under the pillow, there it is next to me, not ringing when I call it. I contacted customer service about it and they told me it works best with the FreedomPop app open and the screen unlocked. Useless as can be. At least for me. They released my phone’s, but I think I need them unlocked to use them with the free government phone systems you get outside the 99 Cent only store and other locations in town. Accidentally got mother in law signed up for the free phone and found out it was only a Sim card. Hopefully we can use one of the FreedomPop phones for it. Not sure if it will work yet?

Freedompop is a rip off and a lie. I signed up to get a Sims card from them for $9.99 and they failed to tell me that from then on $59.99 would be debited from my account every month after that until I cancelled and the Sims card isn’t even useable. They lied and ripped me off. Don’t do it. You can’t trust anyone anymore!

I LOVE your quirky sense of humor, I truly do, and very much appreciate the work you do here that helps indigent and destitute people. I understand you need that humor, (are people poor and qualify because they are stupid and can’t read-I’m not, but I qualify because the loophole in CA is they just count your monthly income and not your assets which I need as I get less than $500 a month in SS but assets allow me to withdraw at the minimum $20K a year for thirty years-not bad if you already own you home and pay no mortgage and pay low taxes becuz of Prop 13) as it must be frustrating to have to repeat continuously that you are NOT the companies but anyways, you SHOULD have said Mr. Lamb:
“We’re glad that any advice you found here was helpful in obtaining your lifeline phone but please keep the packaging and paperwork that you got your phone with, we are NOT the providers, so if you have any problems we can NOT help you at all, you need to contact THEM.”
(If he has lost the things above, again, give him the number of the agency that can give him his provider name), he and others made not of been aware of your slight sarcasm in your reply and took you seriously and you will continue having to reply to the same idiotic questions about how to sign up and whining complaints, eve n if you say over and over you are NOT a phone provider just a portal for information, people here don’t seem to understand and look at your helpful website as an “ombudsman” to the companies or if they are REALLY dense (as far too many seem to be) think you are the companies themselves.
On a note, I would NOT recommend in any shape or form, Freedom Pop, I knew about them since they started a decade ago, and it’s incredible the number of horror stories of them on various forums. All of the lifeline providers are not very good customer service and phone model wise and there are alternatives, for example I started with a phone company where I can pay less than $12 a month for limited ($8 for the first six months as they take 25% off then) 300 talk min (they have unlimited talk plans though) and unlimited texts and DATA (first 200 MG is high speed and then UNLIMITED 2G after that) run on Sprint towers but roll over to Verizon if not available, they have a referral program where both the new customer and referring one get $15 off. If you wish to start a page of low cost (maybe under $15 monthly) for people not wanting the hassle to get an Obama phone or not qualifying) perhaps you can do that and when I got my Obama phone I can relate the name of the company (I want a second phone before I do that as I will need to reveal the phone number of the one I have now to get the referral credit.)
