U.S. Connect is a Texas-based company that makes free government cell phones available in Arkansas, Maryland and West Virginia. If you live in any of those states, check out the company’s various programs.
Before we get into the various plans offered by U.S. Connect, we need to give you a little background on how the Lifeline Assistance companies work. Basically, the government pays each company $9.25 per account per month. Most of those companies “charge” their customers $9.25 per month, but apply the $9.25 government payment against that price, zeroing out the cost and offering cell phone service to their customers for free.
We only tell you this so you’ll understand the prices of the various plans offered by U.S. Connect, because their plans aren’t explained as simply as other companies’ plans.
U.S. Connect will give you 250 minutes/texts per month for $9.25 but they apply the standard $9.25 discount so the end result is that you pay $0. Other plans allow you to get more minutes for extra payment (see below).
PLAN | WHAT YOU GET | COST | YOUR COST |
---|---|---|---|
Value Plan | 250 Minutes/Texts | $9.25 | Free |
Great Value Plan | 500 Minutes/Texts | $19.25 | $10.25 |
Supreme Value Plan | 1000 Minutes/Texts | $39.25 | $30.00 |
In addition to your free cell phone, U.S. Connect also gives you unlimited 911, caller ID, call waiting, voicemail, and live customer service agents.
But what if you need more than the standard 250 minutes per month? Well, U.S. Connect offers you several affordable packages that let you add extra minutes to your account. Check out these offers:
100 Minutes/Texts – $5.00
200 Minutes/Texts – $10.00
400 Minutes/Texts – $20.00
600 Minutes/Texts – $30.00
1000 Minutes/Texts – $50.00

I live in Pineville, WV. 24874. I have Magic Jack home service but I need a cell phone for emergencies when I am out and about paying bills and such. Every free cell phone company tells me they don’t service Pineville, WV. but I have to go to other areas around there such as Oceana, WV for therapy and like I stated before I need a cell for emergencies. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure what to tell you, Betty. If the companies say they don’t service your area, we have to assume they are correct. Here’s a question for you: Are you certain that you have contacted all the companies offering service in your state? Make sure you check them all out at this link:

It seems as if it’s taking Lifeline companies longer and longer to get phones delivered — based on our readers comments. One reader just told us that it took six months for her phone to be delivered (it was not from your service provider). Hang in there a little longer, James.

Michael Stafford says
I was originally with Reachout Wireless and I was informed by them that they will not be carrying my service any more and I should find another carrier. The only thing is that I just bought a new phone a couple of months ago and I was wondering can you keep your old phone and your old number.
Free Government Cell Phones says
That’s a two-part question, Michael, so let’s answer it in two parts:
1. Keeping your old phone should be possible because free government cell phone companies (and ALL cell phone companies, for that matter) are required to allow you to unlock your phone to use with other networks/companies. It may be as simple as switching SIM cards. Some companies drag their feet and make it more difficult than others, but before you choose a new company, you should confirm that they will allow you to BOYD (Bring Your Own Device) or BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone).
2. Yes, you can keep your old number. Just tell the new company that you want to “Port over” your old ReachOut number.

I recently got a phone through your free phone service. I lost my phone while visiting with friends on a camping trip out of town. May be staying. I’ve used this phone number to apply for jobs in this area because I may be staying. I need another phone. Please help. What should I do? All I know is I signed up for the phone at a local grocery store with a representative for US Connect. I have no phone. I need an email contact who can help.

Anthony Rackley says
I was a Lifeline customer until the used phone I was given ceased to work. It was junk and the kid on eutaw street in Baltimore City was rude as hell even after your customer service told me to go there for a replacement. No worries. I switched to QLink just moments ago. Probably won’t matter to you because I’m one in millions. But if you do business this way as a rule, while I’m not the first to leave you, I definitely won’t be the last. See ya.
Albert Palmer Short says
I was given an area code(386) that is not in my area(904). When I tried to change it there was confusion on my part about the instructions. When I tried again I gave them the number I wanted changed, the automated voice replied there is no such number. How do I get my number changed to an area code of 904? Thanks.
