Customers signing up for one benefit, Lifeline or ACP, and in states where Lifeline is not available through StandUp Wireless will receive a SIM Kit and not a phone. ACP Device Discount
The good news isn’t done yet. When you enroll in an ACP plan, you get a one-time discount of up to $100 on a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer. Depending on which one you choose, you will get your device for a co-payment of more than $10 but less than $50. That’s what we call a bargain.
How to Qualify for a Lifeline Phone and Service
Qualifying for a StandUp Wireless phone is easy if you are one of the many financially disadvantaged these days. In general, any of the following qualifies you:
- Low Income Home Energy Assistance Plan (LIHEAP)
- Medicaid
- Board of Education Free Lunch Program
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Food Stamps
- Section 8 Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA)
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
- Income at or below 135% of federal poverty level* (proof required)
Qualifying for the ACP discounts is even easier. The program participation with which you an qualify are almost identical, but the income eligibility is much more lenient. You can qualify as long as you make less than 200% of the Federal poverty guideline numbers.

Can’t argue with that.
Robert says
I switched to StandUp from SafeLink for a few days before I bailed. Here’s my experience.
Received the SIM card and did a speed test. I have tmobile’s service for home internet and am very familiar with the service, but this was hard throttled to 3mbps. Even out and about, no matter where, no matter how close to the tower, 3mbps. Definitely a hard throttle. Compared to SafeLink on AT&T, I could get 100mbps on everything but video, whereas this was all data being throttled to 3mbps.
Alright, fine.. I can deal with that, but the reason I bailed is because, well, I can’t say if it was SafeLink or StandUp, but I had them conference called together at one point after 2 days of calling back and forth to try to get my number ported. They effectively told me it wasn’t possible due to “technical limitations”. They blamed each other and neither would budge. I wasn’t going to give up my number, so I took safelink’s advice and went with another provider that offered service on the same network as my SafeLink SIM (AT&T sim, so effectively find another AT&T based provider. Which I did)
The support wasn’t horrible. The hold times were maybe slightly better than the average I experienced with SafeLink. They were all very friendly, and I talked to a lot of agents in those few days. The English wasn’t great, but it was understandable. Marginally better than SafeLink overall in that regard.
All in all, if you’re not worried about your existing number or a hard throttle, it’s not a bad choice. You can probably do better, but all else being equal, it’s a fair choice.

StandUp is the provider. Are you perhaps asking which national cell network the company uses?

as of 10/21/2022 the company has pulled all support. they have removed their website and all calls to their customer service hangs up when you call them and get past the automated prompt.
seems like another company that takes the governments money for the program and runs.

You need to contact StandUp Wireless customer support either on another wireless phone or a landline. if you do not have access to neither, then contact them on a computer be going to their URL business link. If you don’t have a computer, go to a public library to use one. If you cannot get to any phone, computer or library, then you are out of luck. But, you appear to have posted your message somehow on this website, so you must have access to something.

I have already spoken with 2 or 3 government persons trying to have my cell phone service restored….I’M GETTING NOWHERE with these people.
I have- or make that “had” free govt cell through Access Wireless until over a week ago. I was told they were changing to another network/ channel or something. I was told they would be sending me a “sim” card- or something…but I never received it. I called Access and was told “you don’t have an account”. EVEN IF I WAS SENT A SIM CARD, I DON’T KNOW HOW TO INSTALL IT.
I’m not stuck or “in love” with Wireless. I just need cell phone COMMUNICATION. When I leave my house without a cell phone, I’m afraid of trouble. I already have a FLIP phone and wish to continue with a FLIP phone.
I receive Food Stamps, Assisted Housing, LowIncome<PLEASE HELP!!

Benjamin j McCrimon says
I was told that you needed a expiration day on your food stamp card or your medicaid card, but they do not have a expiration date on them. also they cannot give you anything or paper work that tells you when it expires. they call you on the phone and renew your application every year when it is time to do so. they do not give out such information. all you need to know if the person who is applying is on food stamps or medicaid.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Who told you that you needed an expiration date?
Vivian says
This phone company was great when they were “Cintex Wireless”, since the change to Standup Wireless I had quite a few issues with them to the point that I decided to take my complaint to the BBB. I was told the phone number you receive is pretty much generated which is just a work around way of saying, the number you get isn’t new. It’s most likely been used by at least one person previously and if you have bad luck like I did, you’ll receive text messages, phone calls and picture texts from people who think you’re someone else because the previous owner of your number didn’t tell everyone they know that they’ve switched companies. As of 2021, I’ve noticed 2 apps continuously install on my phone without my permission. An app called, “Sent” and another called, “SmartUs”. Both have Android symbols but if you do a Google search or search for these apps on the Google Store, you won’t find anything. Changing settings does nothing and I’ve noticed when I try to uninstall the StandUp app from my phone, it won’t let me. Considering I saw someone on BBB speaking of intrusive popups from apps that couldn’t be removed from their phone permanently, I have no doubt StandUp is behind it. It’s gotten to the point where I install these apps at least 4-5 times throughout a 24 hour period, only to wake up the next morning and the apps are right back on my phone to greet me with a pop up in the morning. Not okay.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Definitely not ok. We completely understand why that drives you crazy. Have you considered switching to a different service provider?
Vivian says
I’m going to look into it. I was already weighing my choices but due to a customer review on the BBB about the apps mentioned above (the customer stated the apps contain trojan malware), it’s given me even more of a reason to change providers. Safelink is a no go for me due to previous application issues. This website has been a big help with narrowing down pros and cons, so I will use it to my betterment.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Glad we (and our readers) could help.

The free government cell phone is, as the name implies, free. You should not be required to pay for a phone UNLESS you enrolled in a plan that offers a SIM card only plus more internet. Is that what happened?

Ink Dragon says
this site says they are Sprint CDMA, when they are actually T-Mobile GSM. Unfortunately they don’t cover my area(even though t-mobile says they do, as I’m right on the edge of their coverage).
Ink Dragon says
Also forgot to mention it took 4-5 tries to finally get them to accept my application. They don’t tell you when they reject it(it’s within 2 hours), nor do they clearly state why(apparently my photos weren’t crystal clear, so I switched to scans of my IDs), and as soon as it’s rejected you’ll be required to submit the whole application again.
Customer service wise, the phonecalls felt rushed while they insisted I was wrong about why there was no service in my area.(t-mobile does not service my area) More then once I had an operator stop talking to me to shout or speak to someone in the background in hindi.
Am returning the phone to them, and canceling with them. Unfortunately they wont let me cancel until I return the phone to them leaving me without a phone for the better part of a month.
Glenda says
I don’t have internet service ? I dialed 611 and they said I needed to call from a different device? Is there another number to call and activate my internet service
Free Government Cell Phones says
That’s a new one, Glenda. We have no idea why you would need to call from a different device. Any readers have any ideas?
Shaggy2Broke says
My best guess is that they don’t support using data while on a call orthey don’t realize that you can still access all of the phones settings and functions while on a call… Can’t fix stupid!

Laurie Crimmins says

Free Government Cell Phones says
Impossible to say, Laurie. The phones are given out randomly, so the person before you could get one make and model, you could get another, and the person after you could get still another.
Shaggy2Broke says
Whatever device you receieve rest assured it will be some generic cheap low end device with far less than impressive specs.

Erin says
I tried Standup Wireless recently. I do no recommend it. They sent me a phone with adware. Ads popped up upon turning the phone on, and whenever it woke from sleep mode. I attempted to correct the issues by disabling and uninstalling suspicious programs but it didn’t work.
The phone also was not fully functional. Certain apps like the camera would not work due to some “overlay error”. I did some research and found this is common with Android 6.0, and that the fix for it was to play a ‘guessing game’, randomly changing overlay settings in apps till the app that wasn’t working worked. Not worth my time or emotional stress.
So I contacted the rep the day after I got the phone , June 2nd She responded next day but after I gave her verification info she dropped off the planet June 3rd. I waited a few days-taking into account weekends- then on June 8th shot her an email to touch base and see if she needed anything else from me. Never heard back.
Was able to call one day like 2 hours before they closed and the rep was polite but pushy. I explained how I understood this to be an android issue and I tried fixing it and just wanted to cancel at this point. He still felt the need to tell me all phones with android 6.0 have the overlay issue (yes I got that) and wanted to fix it over the phone for me.
On one level I appreciate the offer but I am not good with direction over the phone, and I was also trying to get ready to go out (but only time I had to call them). Plus I doubt he could fix the adware issue. And I couldn’t even get the phone to turn on while talking to him so it was a very stressful experience. I had to tell him a relative died (which was true) and that I had other things on my plate to get him to back off. And then I still had to verify he was actually canceling my account.
Maybe I sound like a jerk since he wanted to help but I called to CANCEL , not fool around with it. A company loses points with me if they make that difficult.
Free Government Cell Phones says
We can’t disagree, Erin. There are plenty of other fish in the sea and plenty of other free government cell phone companies. You should check them all out and make the switch to a company that offers better service. Here’s where you can find all those companies and plans offering service in your state:

During the Hurricane Harvey Event, I was able to add minutes and data to my phone. I also had Lifeline support on my phone. I transferred my service to an old handset, a Samsung phone and had no problem. I suppose during the acquisition BlueJay by Standard all of my account information was not transferred. I lost service and had difficulty in trying to get communications re established. My number is 832 466 **** and the email associated with it was ********@gmail.com. Please Help. I am struggling to reestablish connections with all of my old business contacts for my small tutorial service. I can’t do it without my service being active. An alternative phone number that I can be reached is 832-332-****. My livelihood is being compromised since academic tutoring in the summer will be at it’s height and I will not be able to be contacted. Please advise on how I can get all the texts and that come to my phone. Sincerely, Dianne Houston Hawkins
Free Government Cell Phones says
If your phone service was cancelled, you will probably not be able to retrieve those contacts, Dianne. But you should call your service provider’s customer service team to find out the exact status of your account.
Shaggy2Broke says
Your personal contacts have absolutely nothing to do with any service provider… contacts can be stored in the phone itself, a sim card, or your Google account.

Tim Bruce says
Can you turn a old phone in to a government phone
Free Government Cell Phones says
Most of the free government cell phone companies offer BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) or BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) plans. But not all phones are compatible with all cell phone networks, so you’ll need to check with customer service BEFORE enrolling to find out if your specific phone will work with that company’s network.
Shaggy2Broke says
*an old phone into…
This all depends on whether or not your service provider supports “Bring your own device” as well as the comparability of the specific phone with the service providers network.
Ralph Koplowitz says
I met the qualifications for the Lifeline, free government cell phone service through Assurance Wireless for 4 years. The reception was fine, except inside my Public Housing apartment in Andover, MA where I’d have to run outside in the snow and rain to make or receive a call properly. I cancelled my landline before I knew the cell phone service would be so unrliable indoors.
I got fed up. I’m 70 yrs old with health issues and I must have a reliable cell phone. I switched to Safelink on the neighbour’s suggestion (who makes her calls through a paid cable modem and gets good reception). After many hassles finally got my phone and set up. Works outside away from the building, but doesn[t work at all indoors or even outside near the building (like my Assurance one did. I’m told they’re using a T-Mobile Tower 10 miles away; hence the weak/none reception. They refuse to give me a signal booster (as T-Mobile does to it’s customers (free). I am one very exasperated 70 yr. old person!
What other companies provide Lifeline free govt. cell phone service in Andover, MA??
Thank you!

Yes when I call someone who has caller ID. Someone’s. Name comes on the caller ID. The person had the number before me and who ever. Call don’t answer. Because they don’t. Know it’s me and I have to tell them they should fix that

I entered my zip on their website and it said it could not find it, So I called customer service and a man answered that I had a hard time understanding. It turns out they are not accepting applications online and you have to travel to an event to get a phone with them. There was only 2 in the state of TX and they were 100’s of miles from me. He said try back in 15 to 30 days to see if there was any closer. It is a waste of time.

How can I setup my voicemail and retrieve messages from another phone to keep from using my minutes, my voicemail has not been setup ever and it’s full and can not receive any messages.
Susan Davenport says
Customer service is really terrible this guys can’t understand you or you can’tunderstand them and they hand up in you, after we have such a hard time ggetting connected. It’s a loss of time trying to add time to your phone. After 4:00 ,they automatically make you go through the whole thing to hang up on you. They’re extremely rude,

I have called and been put on hold several times trying to get in touch with customer service through 1800-544-4441 and 611 and after waiting forever just for them to answer they tell me that I have the wrong number. Has the carrier changed in Arkansas or something? I need to know how to get in touch with standup so that I can put a lifeline package on my phone. Do any of you know how I might be able to do that or who I may need to speak to? Please help. Thanks
