I have been with Qlink for a couple years, but the phone they gave me is very glitchy and cheap, ZTE. The phone was dropped and was no longer workable. I checked the Qlink website for compatibility on a Google Pixel 2, which they claimed was indeed compatible. They sent me a new sim card and could not activate the phone sitting inside my home. Come to find out, the new sim card was a T-mobile, which has no coverage inside my home. Called Qlink to resolve, spent countless hours explaining my original ZTE phone had a Sprint sim card (which worked flawlessly) but they sent me a T-mobile sim card for replacement. Requested a Sprint sim card for my Google Pixel 2 and they sent me another T-mobile sim card. BTW, the Google Pixel 2 is a combination CDMA /GSM phone, it will work on either network. Well after numerous calls and no resolution, I am currently researching the Lifeline phone providers, to find out which ones have the best coverage for my area and switching, I would not recommend Qlink to anyone, when I did talk to a support person, it was extremely difficult to understand them, and they couldn’t seem to comprehend the issues that I was dealing with. They basically refused to resolve my issue, and no longer respond to my email requests.

I had the same problem, received 4 SIM cards that didn’t work, my phone is a CDMA and they sent GSM cards, no help from customer service, they insisted I received the correct SIM card. . Now they say my town qualifies, but not my address. THIS RURAL TOWN IS ONE SQUARE MILE IN SIZE. How can my neighbor ( less than 20′ away) receive Qlink lifeline service but not me. I’m looking for another service too. .

Buyer Beware! QLink used to offer reasonably priced Replacement phones if you wanted a better phone. I purchase a $139 Motorola phone. However, the power button came off and it can’t be replaced by QLink. However, Motorola will repair or replace it for more than what I paid for it from QLink, plus, an additional $40.00 shipping charge. Therefore, I am now out of $139 since I will be replacing the phone and getting new service through another carrier. ADDITIONALLY… QLink no long has reasonably priced Replacement phones. They no longer carry Motorola, and their name brand phones such as Samsung or LG are around $799 or $899… I mean really? These are options for people who have low income?

QLink’s customer service is downright deplorable. Representatives can only lifelessly offer canned responses to questions about issues that do not resolve the problem. Asking to speak to a supervisor begins a sometimes 2-day process that still may not provide needed information or resolutions. Phones are very often refurbished, outdated equipment. As long as you can get a phone that works and does what you need, this company is “just ok”. If you ever have questions or problems, expect time-consuming frustration .

I can not send a text message cause it says roaming and when I try to call it will say no Sim or Sim error. Now it says PUK code. LMAO. When placing a call it also says thank you for choosing Verizon please hang up and dial *611 or it will say sprint error 97. I have tried different Sim cards ( brand new). But other times I can call out but never do I receive a call unless it’s my ole man. I get text messages once and a while. Plz help me.

You can’t. You need a phone. You apparently signed up for a plan that provided you with a chip. That kind of plan is intended for someone who has a phone or intends to go out and buy one. We assume you got some internet usage with that same plan because that’s usually how they are structured.

I’m on full disability and food stamps. I just moved out of the drug infested city housing and my phone gets cut off.that was 4 months ago and they still haven’t sent me a SIM card.
Iv filled out the application every 2 weeks thinking eventually the state and them will get on the same page….. nope….I’m clueless as to what proof they are seeking of when they say your proof has been denied. Then I call….. someone in India asnser the phone in a call room so loud I half to yell into the phone just to hear myself talk. And forget about understanding the agent. O but they have the chat agent to goes round and round the question and never answers anything.
4 months and im no closer to getting a new sim card than the day I started and I don’t know why or what they want.
fortunately I just found out that that haven’t got the monopoly on this so I’m happy shopping around!

When I called I was told I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $35 TO GET A PHONE. I was also told my acct. was canceled which I did not do, their phone was specifically sent for repairs.

I wrote complaints to Ga Pub. Utilities Commission and GA Comsumer Protection Bureau which wants complaints like this that affect the pubic, not just the individual

Could u pls look into this and give me a phone # that I can actually speak to a representative/agent, a live person. If u can’t do that do u have another way I can address this problem. At this point, I have NO MINUTES. I was told I have 970 minutes left on my phone. They are trying to change my phone and put my minutes on it. Pls give me an answer I can use. I was attempting to secure my Qlink phone and the Sim became PUK LOCKED. They said they can’t help me and want me to buy a new handset from them. Judging from the one I already have from them, I’ll pass. I’m deciding which other provider to switch to but site says “Temporarily down”, another lied on their page saying THEY are the only provider in my state … SMH.

I received a phone in place of my old flip phone it didn’t work when I got it but they would not send me another one and I tried for about a year then I decided to send them the money that they wanted for a phone but I never received the phone and now they’re saying they never received any money but they cashed the money order. Taking over 3 years of telling them at least several times a month that I don’t have a phone when they tell me all about all the wonderful minutes and data I have they never shut me off but they never responded! So now I’m just riding around I might as well pay them the money for another time for the phone. So that would be $50 for a piece of shit phone if they send me the same as they sent me before that didn’t work which was the shittiest in cheapest and lowest grade smartphone that exist, but there’s many times when I really could have used that phone and really needed it! So three years that’s how I decided to turn in my flip phone for one that had the flash content to be able to even handle data! But just don’t want to make sure I keep the little tag on the money order that I’m sending and I’m going to take pictures of it before I send it so they can’t tell me that they didn’t receive the money! And how would they know anyways they keep the rottenness records that ever was they can’t even get back to me in over 3 years when they say they’ll get back to me the many times that I glimpsed messages in different ways! They always said they review my message and get back to me and never ever did! They got the money for the when they didn’t send me and I don’t like paying money twice for the same thing but I guess I got no choice but it’s not going to happen again!

Don’t bother with Q-Link unless you think you’ll never lose your phone or want to buy a replacement.. Losing my phone was completely my fault and I was willing to buy the $25 replacement instead of just hopping services like I used too. But they wouldn’t take either of my cards even though they say they take Discover and Mastercard. I tried to purchase via the website and got a popup saying my cards were “blacklisted’…These are my current cards in good standing, never stolen. I don’t know what they mean.

I attempted to contact customer service via both phone (they say they will call you back if you want) and email and no reply. Sent a follow up email about a week later and still no reply. The first email was very detailed so they would understand what I needed help with and I was clear I had lost my phone. Now today they have canceled my account, so I have sent an email AGAIN this time asking why as I reported it lost and asking for reinstatement. I doubt I’ll hear back.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had trouble with customer service. The concept of Lifeline is great but the service greatly need improvement. Phones are still tinny, you can’t always (if ever) bring one lifeline phone to another lifeline service (so have to just trash phone), customer service can be difficult to contact (some don’t even have a contact email). This program is suppose to help people stay connected; I was totally willing to pay for a new phone but they just didn’t want to help me.

For your Q Link phone to be working after 20 years is an amazing feat since the company was founded only 8 years ago. But no matter how old it is, you have two options. (1) Contact Q Link customer service to find out how to get a replacement phone, or (2) Check out all the free government cell phone plans in your state and you may find one that fits your needs even better than your Q Link phone. I have been with QLink for over 3 years and had no problem with them until I purchased a new phone from them. Not one of the cheap $25.00 phones but a $139.00 phone. When I moved from one apartment to another apartment, in the same building, they couldn’t seem to get my new apartments number to update. For over 10 month’s I called to try to update my address, which resulted in the same problem, they couldn’t get it to update. Was this my fault? No. So when I went to order my new phone, I specifically called customer service to make sure that the phone I was ordering was sent to my current address, not the one that they had on file. The customer service representative assured me that it would get sent to the current address. I waited and watched when it would be delivered. I got the notice that it had been delivered and went to my mailbox to find it empty. Come to find out, it had been delivered to my old apartment. To make a very long story short, the people living in the apartment had got the phone but told the manager of the building that they had thrown it away. When I showed the manager that they had indeed used the phone, she told them that they could be evicted for theft. In the meantime, I called the post office, my debit card to put a stop on the payment, called the police to make a police report and I had called Q-Link to report that the phone was sent to the wrong address and had been stolen. I was informed by Q-Link that it was too bad, that none of their services are guaranteed and I would just have to order a new phone. AUFKM!!! I wouldn’t have thought too much about it had it of been $25.00, but $139.95, that is a lot of money to me because I live off of SSDI. After a week of pondering what I could do about getting a new phone, the people that stole it showed up at my door with the $139.95 because they didn’t want to be evicted. So I called my debit card company and told them to cancel the stop payment, which they did. Which means that I did not receive any money back from Q-Link or otherwise. I reordered the phone, contacted the post office and told them that they were sending me another phone and to make sure it went in my current address, not the old one, which they did. So I am thinking everything is just fine. Until I got an email stating that I was almost out of minutes. So I went online and tried to order their $2.00 bundle for unlimited minutes and other stuff. I received a message that I could not use a card to purchase anything because it had a chargeback on it and that it had to be in the form of a money order. With it being on a Saturday, I couldn’t call them, they are the only company for lifeline phones that are only open M-F from 8-6. That is another drawback with this company, plus the fact that you can be on hold for up to an hour just waiting to talk to a person. So I emailed them asking them to allow me to purchase things with my debit card because there had not been a chargeback on the card. I even sent them 2 different statements from the debit card company that there had not been any money recovered because I had canceled the request. I got an email back from them telling me to contact them to get this problem fixed. So on Monday I called and told the customer service person the issue and he said that he would run a different card if I had one, which I did. The same thing came up, I had a chargeback on the card, I couldn’t have it was a different card that I had just got on the previous Friday. So I asked to speak with a supervisor, after being on hold for 30 minutes, I finally get a supervisor. I explained the circumstances of what had happened, how I sent in the proof that I had not received any money back and would like to get some minutes on my phone. I think they all read off a script because he kept repeating to me the same phrase that the customer service person had repeatedly said to me. “You had a chargeback on this card and you can’t purchase anything unless you buy it with a money order.” After hearing that for the 100th time, I became very upset and told him I was not stupid, I had heard him but he was not listening to me. Needless to say, he continued to interrupt me when I was trying to explain to him about sending in proof that I had not received any money back and should be able to purchase minutes. After a time, I got tired of being disrespected, interrupted and I went South on him. He said that he was not going to be talked to in that manner, even though he was extremely rude to me and if I used one more swear words he would hang up on me. Well, I told him he didn’t have to worry about that, and I hung upon him. What kind of lifeline program doesn’t take responsibility for anything that they offer and when you have proof of something completely ignores it? I would have understood if I had received the money back, but when they are refusing to let me purchase minutes with any card, that is stepping over the line. So I have reported them to the BBB, Universal Service Administration Company, the State Utility Service and the FCC. I will probably have to find a new provider, but after being treated like a criminal that is fine with me. I would not recommend this company to anyone after this.

I’d like to share an experience I had with qlink for those who are trying to make a decision. I have been with them for about a year, and honestly had no problems. I found out that Safelink offered 2gb of data, so I decided to give them a try and see if I could get a signal with any of the 3 providers they work with. I contacted qlink about a number port and letting them know I was switching service providers.

Qlink responded, but not in the way that a rational company would. All of my account information was deleted, so I don’t even have an account number to give to safelink. They have been hanging up on me, disconnected the phone number I was trying to port, and are no longer even letting me through to speak to anyone. I’m actually willing to pay for the number to be forwarded, but they won’t even let me offer to do so because they’re blocking my calls now. I understand I can’t have multiple lifeline providers, but there’s a legal process to port numbers, and they’re clearly not following it. Willing to work with them and find an alternative, but have gotten the cold shoulder.

As I said, for the year I had qlink, I had no issues. The only times I ever contacted them, they’ve been very polite and their support staff is easy to understand. But it rubs me the wrong way that they’re so resentful of a transfer out. I would have likely returned, because I’ve now found that all three other major carriers do not have a decent signal here, so I’m stuck with Sprint… But not with qlink, I will not return to them due to this. So here I am again to find another provider, and I’ll have to switch yet again after the 60 day window is up.

Just a “user beware” post. QLink isn’t all bad, but my experience turned sour very quickly when I actually needed them. Just something to keep in mind.

I am trying to get a free phone and service from Qlink for my father for 6 weeks now. It is feels like they make fun of us. It took time to understand how the papers should be filled. finally, in 4 weeks it was done and we were emailed about a phone that was sent for us (which we paid for, by the way). The phone was “dead on arrival”. We tried to charge it, took to the “radio shack”-to the specialist-to find, what was wrong. No one could find the reason and fix it. So, I called the company and their agent emailed us a return label and promised to replace the phone. Instead, in two weeks, when we did not hear from the company, we called. To our surprise the automatic voice informed us that our account was cancelled because we returned the phone…I am trying to contact the live person, sent messages through website (no email or chat are available). Still nothing. what should we do next?

You can always switch service providers (and receive a new smart phone from the new company) if you’ve been with your current one for 60 days or more. Here’s where you can find a list of all the free government cell phone companies and plans in your state:

Would someone, a real, live person, please help this old guy, who has been trying to help a paralyzed woman, who is a patient in a nursing home, with no phones in the rooms, to get a phone, so she can connect with the outside world and get the things she needs? Please! I’ve made application to Q Link, (enrollment #95389653) and sent PA State documentation of her Medicaid status. The app process then led me to LifeLine, where I filled out their app for eligibility, but I’m now stuck at that point – I don’t know what to do next. Maybe, I was supposed to go to LifeLine first, but I think I got bad info from my PA State Rep. LifeLine asks me to select a phone company, and when I select Q Link, it says the app has been cancelled and I must go back to the beginning – but, the beginning of what?? I’m the woman’s outside caregiver and “gopher”, but I must leave here for two weeks of work in California. Since I actually began this process with Q Link about a month ago, I was hoping I could succeed in getting her a phone before I leave here April 17. So, my appeal is: Is there someone with a heart who would be willing to please help me complete this process for Katrina, because this little man is stuck? I also found note of a second number that could pertain to enrollment at some time: #95689180, but I’m not sure, as there have been several people trying to help her, but they’ve quit, and I’m still trying. Please help! Please call 610-781-**** or email *************@Comcast.net.

After reading the nightmare scenarios and complaints on service and customer service, I’ve opted to buy a $30 cheap track phone and use txt now app. I’m limited to wi fi only but can usually find a business with public wi fi access. If I can afford to top up my old flip phone for the month it’s a bonus to have that convience. I understand this option probably won’t work for most individuals though. I’m fortunate to live with someone who has regular service.
I haven’t seen anything regarding if you port an existing number to a government phone if you can get it back if you cancel and are able to get regular service.
I’m not sure on the land line option but it may be a way to have a more stable service without all the legal and other minutes, data, roll over, no roll over, charge extra, penalized, etc traps that appear to be in just about all the terms and conditions of what I have read on different carriers.
If no frills communication is what is needed landlines seems best way. But of course there are circumstances where that isn’t best for some individuals.
I’ve decided not to go the free government phone route for simplicity sake. An old flip phone and cheap track phone for wi fi and a close companion with regular service is my choice and advice if it works for anyone who just doesn’t want to get caught in the trap of what I see government phones have to offer.
On the other hand I’m sure or at least I hope the phones and plans do work for those who have no other options.
All the above is my opinion of course. But perhaps some will agree. Thanks for reading. I know it was long winded but the points made are relevant.

Any idea HOW to “call Q Link”. I don’t have, have never had, and never will have a free phone, but Q Link insists on sending me weekly usage statements along with other undesired e-mails. There voice mail system, once you get through a zillion members, requires the phone number on the account (reasonable), which is on all the statements they send, but then it want all sorts of personal info (date of birth, zip code, and ssn), which invariably fails, since it’s NOT my account. How am I supposed to kill it if I can’t reach them – I’ve sent reply e-mails and e-mailed from their website, with NO reply.

The only reason you should have been transferred to a different service provider is if your old provider went out of business. Is that what happened when you were switched to Q Link?

You can switch service providers any time you want. Here’s an article that tells you how to do it:

      https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/faq/how-do-i-switch-lifeline-providers

You can keep your old number by telling the new service provider’s customer service rep that, “I want to port over my current phone number.” That should be all you need to do. But before you say good-bye to that rep, make sure that you confirm that your current number is being ported over.

The site is not updated. I have Q-Link and I get 1000 minutes. How do I know if the other provider information is accurate? I can’t believe I have to call every company.

We can’t believe it either, Dan. We should be freakin’ horsewhipped for not having every one of the thousands of pieces of information on this website updated every hour on the hour so that you are not inconvenienced in the slightest. Shame on us. We are low-life dogs unworthy of your respect or your consideration. Maybe you should punish us by visiting some other website that has every imaginable piece of Lifeline data updated so that you need to nothing for yourself. What’s that? Our office intern just reminded us that there are no other sites that compare to this one. So it looks like you’re out of luck, Dan.

Many readers have voiced the same complaint, Rich. Do you live in a shelter or some other kind of group home? They will make exceptions and allow multiple residents of a group home to all have free government cell phones. But if you don’t have a permanent address nor live in a group home, it’s virtually impossible to qualify for the program. Crazy, isn’t it?

Or you can just turn the phone off and stick it in a drawer and make sure you don’t use it for 31 days. Your account will automatically be cancelled.

No one at Q Link will answer the phone. Ever.

No one at Q Link will respond to written correspondence sent to the Florida address by mail.

No one at Q Link will respond to written queries submitted on the Q Link site by email.

It is a federal program. Call the FCC and complain: there is no customer service. Call your Congressman / Congresswoman and call both of your US Senators.

Do NOT use this company, they’re awful! My phone was stolen while I was in the hospital’s ICU. Qlink continued to provide service to whomever stole my phone, despite my multiple emails to them asking them to turn off my phone. When I asked Qlink to replace my stolen phone, me they wouldn’t- they said I had to pay $25. What kind of company does that?

I am power of attorney for my brother who resides in a nursing home. He had Qlink as a phone provider for about 5 years. He became unhappy with the service so I changed him to Safelink. Their rep told me they would take care of cancelling the Qlink account. They did not and after 4 months the Safelink account was deactivated because he had 2 accounts. I checked Qlink and it showed his account was pending disconnect so I have not signed up for Assurance Wireless service for him. Once I did that I was told that they only send android phones which is much too difficult for him to use. It shows that the status is still pending. How can I make sure that ALL accounts are cancelled so I can find a provider that still uses the standard flip phone? The is just not enough information given on how to make sure you have cancelled old providers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, Glenda, it sounds as if you’ve done everything correctly. It really is maddening when some companies don’t cancel an account like the rules and regulations say they should. There’s just not much you can do at this point.

Here’s one idea, though. Based on your description, we’re not sure which company your brother is enrolled with. Call that company and ask customer service if it offers a Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) program. Some companies refer to it as a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program. If your company does offer the program, ask customer service which types of phones you are allowed to use. Go out and purchase your brother an inexpensive new or pre-owned phone of the type he prefers and then use it with your current service provider’s service.

First things first, thank you for all the comprehensive information you and your team have gathered here for us. It’s greatly appreciated and the site is super easy to navigate for comparison when deciding which provider to sign up with. I would have been lost when I first applied 2 years ago without your site.

Second, I must admit, I still come to this site when I’m bored sometimes just to read the comments from people who have no idea you’re not their service provider. It makes me feel way more competent than I actually am and your frequently off-the-cuff replies make it all the more enjoyable. I cannot fathom not reading a comment section before submitting a question but these people just blurt out their personal information on a public forum. It’s hilarious and sad at the same time.

I suggest that current as well as potential customers do the same think.

Sprint does not work at all where I live in Idaho. These companies who offer lifeline services here use Sprint. My current carrier is metro pcs who uses the T-Mobile network and works great. It costs me $30 a month. Some of these upgrades with these lifeline companies are the same money for less talk, text and data. So where is the advantage of me switching to a lifeline account? I cannot use it if there isnt any or scratchy service where my house is, and the upgrades cost either the same or more for less talk, text and data. They are trying to make it easier for people like me who are low income and disabled to communicate, but they fall short when they only use Sprint.

You can, indeed, keep your current number. All you need to do is tell the customer service rep that “I want to port over my current phone number.” Take our advice and say it at the beginning of the conversation, several more times during the conversation, and then repeat it at the end and ask the rep to confirm that your current phone number will be ported over.

Two options, Heather. (1) Call your service provider’s customer service team. They’ll probably want to charge you for the upgrade/replacement, but you may get lucky and get one for free. It can’t hurt to ask. (2) If that doesn’t work, you can always switch service providers, because all service providers are required to give new customers smartphones. Here’s an article that tells you how to make the switch:

If you also have internet service, you can switch your service provider after one year. We tell you this because if you switch providers, the new provider will give you a free smartphone. We have a couple questions, Sandra. How long ago did you receive the free government cell phone? And was it a voice-only plan or did it also give you a monthly data package? The reason we ask is that you can switch service providers after 60 days if your account was voice only. If it included data, you can only switch after one full year.

Contact your service provider’s customer service team. You could also Google the make and model of your free government cell phone plus the words “user manual.” Once you find that user manual, look up “call blocking.”

That’s a very unusual situation. People living in shelters are permitted to get free government cell phones, Kim, but you must have a street address to qualify. Try contacting customer service at your chosen free government cell phone company and ask to speak to a supervisor and ask the same question.

Yes, you can. However, not all cell phones are compatible with all cell networks. So you just need to make sure that that phone is compatible with your service provider’s network. In other words, you need to speak to customer service to confirm that your particular make and model is compatible.

If your phone hasn’t been used for months, your account has probably been cancelled. The rules of the Lifeline program say they should be cancelled after the phone has gone unused for 30 days or more. That means you can now re-enroll with any free government cell phone company in your state. Here’s where you can find them:

As we often say, Dawn, we don’t even know how to get our sister’s worthless son to work, so there’s no way to know how to get your husband’s phone to work.

No, seriously, we have no way of knowing what’s wrong with your husband’s phone. You need to contact your service provider’s tech support team to see if they can troubleshoot it over the phone. Good luck. Must be frustrating.

QLINK offers horrible phone service… After 3 months the cheap *** cellphone they sent stopped charging. You can NEVER get to talk to a person live… you call the number they SAY to call for customer service & the RECORDING says check the webstie… I sent an email & they replied saying I’d receive a response in 3-5 business days… yeah.. My LIFELINE cellphone is dead & their reply in 4 business days said check online for torubleshooting ideas…. NOBODY reads the correspondence..

QLINK IS NOT PROVIDING WORKABLE SERVICE AND NO CUSTOMER SERVICE TO RESOLVE ANY ISSUES…

noT LIKELY TO PRINT THIS ONE HUH? NOT EXACTLY THE PROPAGANDA PRAISING THIS QLINK S*** COMPANY…
jUST DOING YOUR JOB CENSORING THE TRUTH SO PEOPLE DON’T GET TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS, AND YOU CAN MAKE GENERIC MUNDANE comments like SORRY, check online to change to another piece of s*** company
Have a great day … You must feel great going home each night knowing that you’re doing s*** to make these service REALLY do their jobs… and YOU STILL GET PAID>>>> for what?

You are not only a foul-mouthed oaf, Rick, you are incorrect. We’ve run countless articles criticizing the government and the free government cell phone companies. And as your comments prove, the only censoring we do is on foul language. Not only do we run plenty of comments that are critical of Lifeline companies, their service, their lack of service, etc, but we often tell readers how to register official complaints about poor service.

Now how about if you set up a doctor appointment so that you can get a prescription for some much-needed Valium.

They do not email you to tell you it’s delivered. They email to tell you it that it shipped and they provide a tracking number. “Shipped” is obviously not the same as “delivered”. The tracking number will tell you if it was delivered to the destination. If it wasn’t, you can still see how close its getting to being delivered.

So now I’m stuck with this membership for a year and I cant use it. I’d like to know when Qlink is going to get coverage in my area. Are they saving up to buy a cell tower or what?

This really is a huge, unforgivable flaw in the free government cell phone program. Any service provider should be able to tell you if they have service at your address and it’s damn near a crime for these companies to collect money for providing service that is so inadequate.

Contact Q Link’s customer service team and ask to speak to a supervisor. Perhaps you’ll get a little satisfaction if you go up the chain of command.

They DO tell you if there is coverage. When I applied March 2017, as part of the application process, you first enter your zip code. First thing it did was bring up a detailed map to confirm coverage before going any farther with application process.

While the phone and the service from Qlink is a helpful thing to people in need, the phone it’s self comes with a program (spyware) that sells your number to telemarketers. Regardless if you list your number with the Do Not Call Registry you will be called from telemarketers. You can not remove the program that does this, other than Rooting your phone from Qlink and in doing so you break the contract with Qlink. Personally I am at end with this problem and hope my message helps others.

It is true why would I take the time to come here to warn others, other than to help seniors and others in need of Lifeline such as myself. The bloatware / Spyware is called “TouchPal”. And the fact the you doubt what is said here by me calls in to question who you represent, the Company or “US” the users. Not only does this so called app try to control how the phones are used by controlling the settings it’s somehow sends info when I use the phone as when I do calls follow from telemarketers. Being poor or old and needing a Lifeline phone doesn’t make “US” stupid. My next step is to contact someone in government that oversees the Lifeline program.

You are absolutely correct in what you have said! What a nightmare cell phone to have. It is ironic I thought too, that every time I use the cell, I mysteriously get a telemarketer call! They are endless, sometimes up to 10x a day! Now I get calls from other area codes recently, guess I because I will decline every call that does not actually have my cell #. Then again, what do you want from the Government, especially when it is free, or is it?

If you want, you can Google the Do Not Call Registry site and it does state that they sell your phone number to certain people. Perhaps, this is what you are actually referring to. Also, TouchPal is not spyware in any way. It is simply a keyboard with fun emoji’s that you can add to your messages. You may easily change your keyboard to the Google keyboard in settings, if you prefer not to use TouchPal. Google will help you to understand the facts about the things that you are thinking. Whenever you don’t understand something, anything, Google it.

Leslie, please think twice before committing to Qlink. If I were you I’d run as fast as you can from having anything to do with this company! If I could do it all over again, I’d choose a different company. There is absolutely NO WAY to EVER get in contact with ANYONE! The phone numbers listed are all automated and have no option and no way to reach a live person. You just go round and round and round listening to prerecorded messages.
Free Gov’t Cell Phones will reply and say you can click on Help Center and then Contact Us but even when you do that an actual person does NOT return your message but once again it’s a prerecorded message and that’s IF you get a response back! It’s complete lunacy. I mean it’s probably great on their side since they probably have 1 person actually working for them!
It says you’re supposed to recertify every year but I’ve only done it 1year and every other time it’s been done for me which is ABSOLUTELY what I DO NOT WANT!!! I want off of Qlinks program but it seems almost IMPOSSIBLE!!!
Well I hope you heed this warning! I just wish I had someone that could’ve warned me before selling my soul to the devil.

Company sucks. Sending out the same phone now also took away the upgrade phone option so they don’t have to deal with people complaining I assume. You can’t get a hold of a person no matter what options you press. Worst company don’t give them money for a new phone.

Buy why are you mad at the person who created a website to help people find a Lifeline phone? freegovernmentcellphones isn’t connected to the phone companies and can’t help with your account. They merely takes all the information already available online or with a phone call to each company, and place it all in one easy to read site. Getting mad at the person who offered to help you for free when they can’t assist you with your personal account info is ridiculous.

Stop being so silly and contact the phone company directly about your account. And thank you to the people who operate this site for helping me out when I was too lazy to google all this info myself.

Probably for the same reason so many other stores are going out of business — it’s far less expensive to do business over the internet. You’re a very rare person in today’s world if you do not have a credit card.

We get this question all the time and we’re frankly amazed that so many people don’t write down important information like this.

There’s only one way for you to find out which free government cell phone company has your account. You need to contact customer service at each of the companies in your state (South Carolina) and ask if they have your account. They’ll be able to find it with your phone number, address, name, social security, etc.

Your problem is that South Carolina has a lot of service providers. 13 to be exact, so it may take a lot of calls. Here’s where you can find that list of companies and each company’s contact info:

We are unable to track availability down to the local level, Jenny. But if you go to the Q Link website and plug your zip code into the form on the home page, you will quickly find the answer to your question.

Remember, though, that Q Link is not your only option. Ten Lifeline companies offer free government cell phones in Indiana and you may find a better deal (more minutes, more texts, data plan, etc) with one of the other companies. You owe it to yourself to be and informed consumer and to check them all out. Here’s where you can find all those plans:

If you’ve already received your phone, it’s probably too late to keep your old number. During your initial call to the new service provider, you should have said, “I want to port over my current phone number.” There’s still a small chance that you can get the old number back, but you must call your service provider immediately and request it. The odds are not in your favor, though.

It’s up to you to be a smart consumer. So take a look at all the service providers in your state before you decide which one to enroll with. Some offer more minutes and texts and some even offer smart phones and data plans. Here’s where you can find all the providers in your state:

I have Qlink and I love it. Being able to text and call without paying over $100.00 a month using Sprint, really helps me out being on disability. I just wish I could by data and able to use the Internet.

Q Link is giving smartphones to all its new customers, Star. Unfortunately, the company is not taking care of its current customers by giving them the same deal. But you would be able to upgrade to a smartphone. Contact Q Link’s customer service team to ask about how to do it.

Well, I violated my own rule of leaving well enough alone because of greed.
I was perfectly happy with my Safelink phone and how it worked as an extension for my Google Voice phone because they used Verizon as their carrier. I switched to QLink to get 500 minutes a month compared to the 350 I got with Safelink, but they use Sprint and with their smart phone I get no bars in my house and it won’t work with Google Voice. Plus I know I do not, not, NOT want a smart phone but just a simple CDMA phone that will work in my home.

So I guess I wait for the 60 days to pass and just switch back to SafeLink.
I’ve learned my lesson and will leave well enough alone from now on.

If you’ve already received your phone, you probably have lost your old number. You could have kept it if you had said, “I want to port over my current phone number” during your application process. There may still be a chance, but it’s a pretty slim one. Contact your service provider’s customer service team and ask if you can get that old number back. Like we said, your odds are pretty slim, but miracles happen.

Did you ask them to port over your old number in your initial enrollment conversation, Brandon? We don’t know what the problem is, but all phone companies are supposed to port over phone numbers upon request. Although it may be too late by this point, you should call again and ask to speak to a supervisor.

Ok this forum is record! People, read others questions, concerns and comments. You will quickly find that this website is not the customer care center for all the free government phone providers. Just a great informational site to guide you in the right direction.

If I may add, let’s think about this, you are getting pissed and irritated over a FREE phone that honestly is a privilege to have, not an entitlement!

I hate my Qlink phone, it’s an android and sucks. I would love to use my iPhone with life line services BUT, what’s the term “BEGGERS CANT BE CHOOSY”

It’s a LIFELINE, and serves the purpose of an emergency phone for those who can’t afford the luxury of choosing their ideal super duper smart phone like the edge or 6plus. For those looking for a job and to have a phone to get potential job calls but can’t afford those high phone rates. To be able to get that phone call from school that your kid is injured or sick and can’t afford to pay for a phone.

Jeez, get a little help and expect the whole kingdom. Be thankful for what you have!

Rant over, continue to entertain me!

Connection Failed (Code: 20).” It seems to run fine and everything seems to work. But with it constanty retrying to connect to ID (which I don’t know what that is) I know it’s using battery and i’m always getting this popping up in my notifications which is pretty annoying more than anything. Any idea on how to get rid of this? I have checked for latest updates on the phone. I’ve found very little about this issue online. Any ideas before calling what most dread, customer service?

“Tethering is when you turn you smartphone into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and share your phones 3G/4G data connection. Once you’ve turned tethering on, any device with a wireless connection can connect to the internet via your smartphone’s connection.”

We are unfamiliar with the Microsoft product, Amy, but if you have wifi access, you really don’t need a special product. Google Skype and you’ll be able to call for free (or virtually free depending on the circumstances). We have a friend who was overseas for six months and he was able to call back to the USA a number of times for and his total bill for that six months was under $5.

If you need Internet for more than just phone calls, there are a number of low-cost options, especially if you have a low income. Check out this link for all the low-income options over at CheapInternet.com, our other website:
