IMPORTANT NOTICE: Company seems to be out of business — website is gone. Please find another company in your state.
Gulf Coast Wireless is now offering free government cell phones only in West Virginia. But the company’s website promises that they’re coming soon to California, Mississippi, New Jersey and Maine. (We’ll let you know as soon as they add those states.)
The Gulf Coast free government cell phone plan gives you a free cell phone with 100 or 250 free minutes every month (see details below). While that doesn’t stack up to the 500 or 1000 minutes offered by other companies in other states, it’s tough to complain about it as long as it’s free. The program also offers free caller ID, free call waiting, and free voicemail. And Gulf Coast promises that it requires “no deposit, no credit check and no hassles.” We’d also add that there’s no connection fee.
Gulf Coast also offers a referral program that lets you earn bonus minutes: Just tell your friends and family about the company’s free government cell phone program and they’ll add 100 free minutes to your account for everyone who enrolls in the program. That’s a great way to make your minutes last even longer.
We’re happy to quote one section of the Gulf Coast website because we think it perfectly expresses the importance of the Lifeline Assistance program:
“Wireless service is considered a necessity for daily modern life. Yet the cost of starting and maintaining such service may be too high for some consumers.” Well said, Gulf Coast. A cell phone is, indeed, a necessity in today’s world and income-challenged Americans who get the phones will surely find them invaluable aids in contacting potential employers, staying in touch with parents and children, and in reaching medical professionals in times in emergency situations.
