Is it true that I could be chosen for a random Verification Audit?

< Back to all FAQ's

Sadly, some people try to abuse this wonderful service. So the federal government and free government cell phone service providers do random checks in an attempt to keep people honest.

The odds against being audited are only slightly less than the odds of you winning the lottery, but you should be aware that it could happen.

What happens if you are randomly chosen for one of these annual verification audits?

You will be required to provide documented proof that you participate in an eligible program or evidence that your income falls below your state’s federal poverty guidelines.

A package with instructions will be mailed to you by your service provider and you will be required to follow the instructions.

If you don’t respond and fully answer all the service provider’s questions, your participation in the free government cell phone program will probably be suspended.

I recently separated from my spouse but we will file this year’s taxes together because we lived together 10/12 months. My exes income would make me ineligible for the lifeline program. I do not have a job but I have a roommate that pays the bills. How can I provide proof of eligibility through income? Would a statement from my roommate be sufficient proof?

My neighbor used my name and address to get a phone for her son since she used her name and address for her own phone. When I applied, it took me months to straighten this out and she was not punished. She also sold her food stamps for half price to buy illegal street drugs which the town Police department is aware of her past abuse with drugs. Her son is currently abusing Heron and overdosed in the past week which she herself informed me after I questioned her whereabouts of her son since I recently had a break in losing my cell phone and pain medication. I severely suffered an entire month with severe pain being unable to replace stolen medication which is part of signed agreement with pain clinic. This woman is a story teller and can talk her way out of anything. I reported her to DTA and Safe link and she continues be unpunished. My friend from Africa insists that the only way to survive in this country is to lie and I am starting to believe this. Being kind, having forgiveness and trying to help others in need has only made me suffer.

We’re sorry to hear about your difficulties, Maryellen. However, we are always optimists and have confidence that everything will work out for you. Don’t give up. Keep reporting fraud, waste and abuse in the system.
