Assurance Wireless is now offering economically distressed Massachusetts residents free cell phones and up to 250 free voice minutes per month.
Until this announcement, Safelink Wirelesss had been the only company offering Lifeline cell phones in Massachusetts and we believe the competition between the two companies will make both of them work harder to serve their customers.
Massachusetts is a state that can definitely benefit from the Lifeline program, because nearly 250,000 of the state’s residents are currently unemployed and more than ten percent live below the official Federal poverty line.
“Assurance is proud to help customers stay connected to potential employers, medical providers and child care-givers,” an Assurance Wireless spokesman said. “We look forward to providing this same type of assistance to eligible Baystaters who need support and resources during, what continues to be, rough economic times for many.”
How do you qualify?
How do you qualify for a free cell phone and 250 free voice minutes? Simple. You may be eligible if you participate in MassHealth or Medicaid, Food Stamps/SNAP, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Emergency Aid to the Elderly, Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children (TAFDC).
You may also be eligible if you live in tribal lands and participate in Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) General Assistance. If you participate in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Head Start Program (under income qualifying eligibility provision only), National School Lunch Program (free meals program only) you may also be eligible.
And, if you don’t qualify by participating in any of the above programs, you are eligible if your household income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
There is no documentation required for the program-based eligibility, but for income-based eligibility you must provide proof.

That’s not the way it works, Betsy. We’re not your dad’s service provider. This is an independent informational website. You need to call his service provider’s customer service team. They may send you a replacement phone for free, but it’s more likely that they’ll charge you for it.

We would suggest that you and your uncle get on the phone with customer service. They will not allow you to enroll him without his verbal approval.

I sent you application for phone and I emailed you my food stamp card and I still haven’t gotten my phone. This is getting crazy I have been trying to get a phone from somewhere and all I get is the run away. I can’t get ahold of doctors, therapist or providers for meds but I can’t get ahold of them with no phone.
