Time after time we’ve said that increased competition in the Lifeline free government cell phone business will drive innovation and bring better service to more consumers.
Assurance Wireless has proven that theory to be correct.
Assurance has broken away from the increasingly large pack of competitors by now offering 250 free voice minutes PLUS 250 texts per month as part of its Lifeline wireless service.
Don’t ask us why they’ve made this significant change without any publicity, because we think this news is so big news that should be screamed from the rooftops. Instead, Assurance chose to bury the news deep within the terms and conditions of its service contract. Here’s the money quote:
“250 Free Minutes Offer – Each month you will receive 250 free voice minutes and 250 domestic messages (text, IM and emails) on the first day of your monthly service cycle.”
Until this new service was offered, free government cell phone users were restricted to 250 minutes per month to call their doctors, to search for jobs, to make emergency calls and to stay in touch with their friends and families. Some companies allowed their customers to text (many others didn’t), but each text typically counted as one minute against their monthly allotment.
Of course, a teenage girl might not consider 250 texts enough to get through the day, but most free government cell phone users will appreciate the added flexibility Assurance is offering them with this new plan.
Is the free text plan available in your state? Depends on where you live. Assurance Wireless is currently available in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. And since Assurance is a subsidiary of Virgin Mobile and is the fastest growing company in the free government cell phone business, they are rapidly expanding into other states.

Thank you, Assurance!!!! I receive/do a lot more texting than talking because the majority of my family and friends prefer texting. Also I am hearing impaired and this is clearly better for me than the frustration of having someone to constantly repeat themselves when talking to me.
