They’ve been flushed down toilets, absent-mindedly left on subways, accidentally smashed by brothers, stolen by burglars, ripped off by ex-girlfriends, and they have vanished into thin air as if by magic.
We get so many questions and comments about lost or stolen free government cell phones that we thought our readers would appreciate a complete rundown of replacement policies for each of the leading service providers. Here’s an article that will answer most of your questions, Peggy:
https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/faq/how-do-i-switch-lifeline-providers
There’s no way for us to know which company offers the best service in your specific town. However, getting the same phone number on your new phone should be easy. All you need to do is tell the customer service rep that, “I want to port over my current phone number.”
Curtis McMaster says
I am with assurance wireless in New Jersey. Phone will not work at all, probably damaged battery. Can I send you a personalized check? Or do you use PayPal? I can send you money directly from my checking account. Or a money order. Thank you.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Feel free to send us a check, but that won’t get you a new phone. We are not your service provider. You need to contact Assurance and we have zero affiliation with Assurance nor any other Lifeline service provider.

Donald L Christopher says
I’ve had assurance for several years now. I recently reported my phone lost but I found it. It wasn’t working correctly when I lost it. Now it wont even power on. I called customer service to try and get a replacement phone and report that I had found it. It’s not my fault that the phone dosen’t work. It’s not like it’s a $2000 phone. As a matter of fact it was junk when it was made in china or wherever. But now they want $40 to replace a 99cent phone. If I could afford $40 I wouldn’t be hassling with assurance wireless. So anyway I’m leaving all my info so on the slim chance someone at assurance is doing their job and reads how I’m now without a phone because they expect to be paid twice for this phone of theirs that’s over a year old, maybe someone who cares might help me out. Slim chance in that I bet. My name is Donald Christopher. My broken phone # is 469-783-****. I can be reach at 469-504-****. I’ve been making inquiries about another phone provider and carrier. I hate I have to do that after all the years I’ve been with assurance but I need a phone. I hope someone reads this and dose the right thing.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Some companies are willing to replace their customers’ phones as often as annually. Others do not offer that service. Unfortunately, if you cannot afford to purchase a phone, you are correct that your only remaining option is to switch service providers.
LaSandra R Hillson says
How can I find the exact carrier for my cell phone I have a phone number and it’s Los can I when I went to get a new phone was told I could not because I was enrolled somewhere else how do I find out what carrier I am with I have the number but lost the phone
Free Government Cell Phones says
We wish all the questions we receive were this simple. All you have to do is dial 6-1-1 on your free government cell phone and your service provider will answer.
Henry says
Go to the Lifeline website and look up the information for your account. It should show which company that you have service with. If you lost the phone, someone might continue to use it which will keep your service active until renewing time comes around.
you should save your application information when you first applied to a company. It would have your cell phone number along with the company that is connected to it.
you can try googling the phone number, but it might only show the network that is uses, not the Lifeline company that issued it.
Moral of the story. Don’t lose your phone and keep a paper trail (or a USB thumb drive backup).

My phone broke with in the first hour I received it someone bumped into me phone hit the floor damaged screen
Free Government Cell Phones says
We are very sympathetic to our low-income readers, but this comment annoys us because it’s just so over the top. “You” broke “your” phone within an hour of receiving it. What happens if you break the next one in an hour? And the one after that? How many new ones do you think the service provider owes you?
JDHern says
Easy there Turbo,… I think you should cut ol LH a lil slack… the homeboy doesnt deserve to be treated like that… seriously who in the hell are you to cut into him like that ??? you aint perfect, neither is he. nor I, hell, no one is…. come on now.. shit does happen..you know that…. so lighten up

I want to cancel my line. I’ve been trying to sign up for a new line for awhile now and not able too, because I’ve tried getting my replacement a few times and they wouldn’t let me get one. And now they are saying my account is still active and I have to cancel my line before being able to use any other government assistance phone place.
Free Government Cell Phones says
It seems as if some companies make it far more difficult to cancel than should be necessary. Here’s an article that tells you how easy it is to make the switch from one company to another:

Is there any way to tell which provider I was on and how do I get a replacement phone?

Tell me what do I do I’ve put it in rice and I have taken the battery out so it can dry, It’s been dry for 12 months. When I finally put the phone back together it won’t slide but does everything else.

Rene Serrata says
I had Total Call service for about 1 yr 6 mo. I lost my subscription, so I called Sprint; My Total Call phone# was; (832)562-****. But when I talked to Sprint, I added $10 to buy a new pin for airtime. Ok, this is the second time I’ve bought airtime for this phone, but It’s like a 3 party phone ! When I make a call, I have to enter the phone # twice ! And who ever I call cannot call me back ! Instead it’s a different number that appears on the recieving end. that ph# belongs to somebody else ! What kind of service is this or is Sprint running scam ??? Please help me resolve this issue. Thx…
Free Government Cell Phones says
We are unable to help you, Rene, because we are NOT Total Call nor Sprint. We’re a bit baffled because Sprint does not offer free government cell phones. We have to admit, though, that it is a very strange situation you’ve described.

Ronald smith says
I would like to update my phone to an new free phone that has all the apps, and camera that is being advertised. How do I go about changing my old phone?
Free Government Cell Phones says
You have several options. (1) Contact your service provider’s customer service team. If you’ve been with the company long enough, they may upgrade you for free. But don’t count on it. (2) If they won’t do it for free, they will let you upgrade for a reasonably small upgrade fee. (3) You can always switch to a different Lifeline free government cell phone company. That would make you a new customer and all new customers are supposed to get free smartphones.
Amanda says
Someone stole my phone and i cant cancel because i cant remember witch company i used is there anyway that i figure it out its been 3 months apparently im stupid. PLEASE HELP
Free Government Cell Phones says
A couple things, Amanda. The new rules of the Lifeline free government cell phone program say that your account will be terminated if your phone goes unused for 30 days or longer. So the odds are that your account has already been cancelled.
But on the off chance it hasn’t, there’s only one way to figure out which service provider you had. Go to this link and click on your state:
https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/states
Start at the top and call each of the companies one after another. Your service provider will be able to identify you by your name, address, social security number, phone number, etc.
Frances says
I have a Figo virtue || , the screen is cracked and it only works if it’s on the charger if unplugged it will shut off need a replacement one don’t know my carrier can u help . Thank u
Free Government Cell Phones says
There’s only one way to figure out who your service provider is, Frances, and it will require a little homework on your part. First, go to this link:
https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/states
Click on the name of your state to find a complete list of service providers in your state. You’ll need to begin at the top of the list and contact customer service at that company. They’ll be able to figure out if you are one of their customers based on the phone number, your name, address, social security number, etc.
If that company says you’re not one of their customers, you need to move down the list and contact each company one by one until you find the one that provides your service.

Marcia says
Hi.
sorry to bother you but can you please direct me as to how to find out what company I have a phone with, I tried to get service and was told I already have one however I don’t. Where do I go from here.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Did they actually say that you already have a phone or did they say that someone at your address has a phone? It’s not unusual for one person to get rejected because a previous resident at your address had a phone. Contact whoever you spoke to before and ask them to check the name on the National Lifeline Assistance Database. The database is supposed to help clear up these problems.
bobby darling says
my mothers phone has been washed and dried it is a budget mobile connect budget stores in Des moines,Iowa with no success .would like to find how replace it for her shes 90 so trying to help her . thank you
Free Government Cell Phones says
Your first problem – other than washing and drying her phone – is that Budget is no longer in the free government cell phone business. That means you need to switch to a different service provider. Here’s where you can find a complete list of all the companies and Lifeline Assistance plans in your state:
https://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/states
Make sure you check out each of the plans to find the one that’s best for your mom. Also, make sure you tell the customer service agent that you used to be a Budget customer.

Where ever the phone is service may be active but u can’t open it, it doesn’t ring & haven’t been used in months. It only said Kroger. I’m in Buffalo New York, there is no Kroger here in NYS

Mark Yount says
Please tell me why I have not gotten my replacement phone yet, it has been 15 days now?
Can’t get a job without a phone, and it was only like 3 months old and stopped taking a charge and therefore, no screen to come on to dial out with, or ability to text, talk to or answer the phone.
HELP!
Free Government Cell Phones says
You may be reacting too soon, Mark. Most of the free government cell phone companies say you’ll get your phone in two weeks, but our readers say it often takes three or four weeks. Sometimes it takes even longer.
velvet says
I would like to switch to access wireless government cell phone please send me the papers to sign and send back please
Free Government Cell Phones says
We’re not Access, Velvet. We’re an independent, informational website. You need to contact Access customer service directly. Here’s where you can find a page that tells you everything you need to know:

Good point, Michael. Note the date on the article. It was written before Q Link’s dramatic growth spurt and the company didn’t qualify for the list when the list was compiled.
Diana Williamson says
My phone is broken.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Then you should do exactly as the article instructs you to do, Diana.
Joseph says
I did not see Truconnect info concerning lost devices
Free Government Cell Phones says
We only covered the largest service providers, Joseph, and Truconnect didn’t make the cut. We’d suggest that you go to the TruConnect website, click on “terms and conditions” and then do a search for “Lost.” We suspect you’ll find the info you need. Alternately, you could try calling Truconnect customer service.
Krista Barnhart says
I had truconnect to begin with. When my phone broke I called customer service. There was no charge for replacement. But it could take up to 60 days. Day 61 I called and was given the run around. Day 65 I finally reached someone with half a brain and was assured phone would be mailed. Day 70 my phone arrived. It wasn’t a smartphone .like I had to begin with and to top it off, the phone did not work. When I called they informed me they didn’t have to replace my phone with the same phone. I told them that was all well and fine but I believed they did have to replace it with a phone that worked. They said they did and hung up. Needless to say I changed service.
Free Government Cell Phones says
Good for you, Krista.
sylvia says
i lost my truconnect free phone, im in Texas, where should i call?
Free Government Cell Phones says
Contact TruConnect customer service. You can find it listed on our Providers page (shown at the top of this page).

MY QUESTION TO YOU IS HOW DO I GET A PHONE FROM THEM???????PLUS MY ACCOUNT IS STILL OPEN WITH THEM.THEY WILL NOT CLOSE THE ACCOUNT ANDWILL NOT GIVE ME A PHONE..MY PHONE NO IS(240 421 ****)ON THAT ACCT.
Free Government Cell Phones says
If they told you that you were ineligible for a replacement phone, you can buy your own phone, Marston, but you need to make sure the phone you purchase is compatible with the Access network BEFORE you buy it. But it’s much simpler to purchase an upgraded phone directly from Access. You can find all the models they make available on their website.
shavonda says
my phone was working and access wireless sent me a text to my phone to upgrade phone by dialling ##72786# and every since i dial that number i cant used my phone cant call 611 or customer service for help..
Free Government Cell Phones says
Go to the Access website. Click on “Customer Support” and then on “Contact Us” and you’ll reach an email for that will allow you to contact Access customer service. It’s a terrible system that makes it as difficult as possible for customers to actually get in touch with a live person, but it’s the only method that’s available.

I lost my cell phone at a bus stop. I placed an ad on Craig’s List hoping the person who picked it up would contact me via e-mail. I don’t know the carrier I have ( I can’t find the paperwork), nor do I know the brand of the phone. I called my number hoping whoever has my cell would pick up, but it went straight to voicemail. Please help!
Free Government Cell Phones says
There’s not much that can be done under your circumstances, Dawn.
Ashley Dawson says
My phone is damaged and i need a replacement phone. I already tried calling the ##72786# number and it did not work. I have access wireless and live in Lakeland fl. I have a coolpad 5560S
Free Government Cell Phones says
We don’t know what thet number is, but it’s not the number shown in the article. Unfortunately, Access has gained a reputation for making it impossible to speak to an actual live agent. Try the email form on the company’s website.
Reggie James says
My phone won’t charge. I replaced the battery and it still won’t charge. Can I order a free replacement? I have the Logic M5 phone from Life Wireless.
Free Government Cell Phones says
You probably will not be offered a free replacement, Reggie. But here’s a thought: A few days ago another reader said something very similar to your comment. Turned out it that his battery charger was broken. Check eBay or Amazon for an inexpensive battery charger. Or take it into a store that sells that model phone to see if it will charge there.
Donna V. says
I live in Ct and have a free telephone. I have won a go play telephone made by Alcatel. Am I able to transfer my telephone to this new telephone?
Free Government Cell Phones says
The best answer we can give you is “maybe.” Sorry to be so imprecise, but it is completely dependent on the make and model of the phone and whether it is compatible with your service provider’s network. Only your service provider’s customer service or tech support teams can answer your question.

Something is absolutely wrong here! My Life wireless broke last night and as I read above call the number that’s listed to report it. They seem to cant enter my file because my address and name does not match! I’m so upset because the day I sign up, the lady who entered my information used my California Identification Card and welfare card so I don’t know why I should be put in this situation to have a problem to enter my account. I don’t have my papers or box no more so I don’t understand why your system would say something else when I wasn’t the one who entered my information, it was your employees who did! I’m very irritated right now!!
Free Government Cell Phones says
It’s not “our” system. We are an independent informational website that not affiliated with any of the Lifeline Assistance companies. You must contact your service provider directly to solve your problem. Good luck.

I think it is so nice to have so many telephone services that offer free telephone service to low income individuals, that may not be able to afford service, this type of service puts a phone in the hands of every household that desire to have their own phone service, and just could not otherwise afford another bill. Thank God for the person that came up with this kind of service in mind. it is not everyone that thinks about the poor .But the Bible says the poor we will have with us always.
