Why do we call the free government cell phone program available in Alaska the best deal available even though it’s not free? When you hear the details, we think you’ll agree.
Alaska Communications has introduced a new twist to the Lifeline cell phone program. Its Lifeline Assistance program offers unlimited talk and text for just $1 per month.
Let us repeat that: Unlimited talk and text for just $1 per month.
To contrast this to other programs available in the lower 48 states: On one hand, most of the programs are free, but this one costs $1 per month. On the other hand, most of the programs limit talk and text to 250 minutes per month, but this Alaska Communications program gives its customers unlimited talk and text.
This makes it easy for qualified low income Alaskans from Fairbanks to Ketchikan to apply for jobs, to stay in touch with their kids, to reach medical professionals, to call 911, to do all those things that require a cell phone today. And you can do it on Alaska Communications’ state-of-the-art fiber optic network, too.
The rules to qualify are virtually identical to those in other states and fall into two primary categories: (1) Applicants must participate in certain government assistance programs or (2) Total household income must be no more than 150% of the official government poverty level.
Is there a catch to this great offer? Not really. You’re allowed no more than one Lifeline phone per household. And they may add local taxes and fees to your $1 monthly service charge. But those conditions are minor inconveniences when you weigh them against everything this program offers.
Congratulations, Alaska Communications. We’re happy to welcome you to the Lifeline program. And we hope your twist on the program spreads to other states.

My wife is disabled and her income is from Social Security Disability does she qualify for a phone under the program?
Free Government Cell Phones says
Unfortunately, no, Zachary. SS Disability is not on the list of ways to qualify for a free government cell phone. But there are lots of other ways to qualify, so take a look and see if you are eligible.
